Guild Chat when switching characters

One feature that frustrates me is that guild chat is not available while switching characters.
It would be nice to be part of the discussion once I reach the character selection screen, and be able to read and respond to messages so that you don't miss anything.
Naturally I want my chat add-ons to be active during this time as well.
