outfits vs costumes in the crown store, what do you prefer?

I personally have enjoyed the outfits over the costumes because I like having access to the individual pieces compared to a "take it or leave it" kind of thing with the costumes.

for instance had something like the dark shaman, noble clan chief, etc. been used as outfits instead of costumes so we could use pieces of them rather then all or nothing I would have greatly preferred them.

though I like that we have been getting more one off outfits in the store, and the pieces as quest rewards (that started way back in summerset with custom psijic pieces) is a great improvement. I always wish it would have been implemented sooner in the games lifespan because certain events like when the last ayleid king dies he gives you his sword, as of now its just a level'd sword, but given the most recent changes having that be a custom outfit style reward would have been so cool.

I held onto the sword for a long time btw, and some of my friends still have it ^_^

Costumes work very well for items that are very prone to clipping when mixed and matched, such as clothing and thematic Armors/outfits.

I like to have both available, and I'm confused by this recent trend of forum topics asking us to choose one or the other.

I use crafted armour and my outfit slot so I can have two different armour sets available for different situations, but I also use costumes. Mainly ones which don't look like armour at all (like the pirate costumes, evening dress, khajiit budi-shirt etc. for times when I think it would look out of place for my character to be in armour (even light armour), like when they're hanging out at home, in the market in town or supposed to be under cover somewhere.

To me it's different things for different purposes and it wouldn't make sense at all to try and ignore 1/2 the options. I like being able to customise how my armour looks and before we got outfits that was one reason I always used crafted armour. But I also like having a large selection of one-piece costumes I can switch to instantly without having to assemble it all first and which don't need to fit the armour scheme - they don't need to look in any way protective and don't need to match the armour slots (for example they can have bare shoulders and arms without me having to lose 2 armour pieces) so there's a lot more variation available.

Poll needs an “other” option! :) I like having both options and, especially since outfit slots are over-priced, having an outfit and costumes allows me to have different looks for each character.

    It depends.

Costumes have a big advantage in not costing gold/tokens to change and dye (the latter applies to ESO+ players). Nevertheless, having control over individual parts is useful too.

Outfits are a great alternative solution to the old costumes which were just existing motifs

I like the NEW costumes which are unique outfits like the Alliance Hero costumes, Warden costume, Mannimarco, Naryu morag-tong costume, etc.

If you pay attention to how the outfits have been designed, they are basically motifs that were split up into more pieces for the sole purpose of creating more microtransactions. It is one of many new predatory monetization schemes the racketeers have come up with to suck more money from the game’s players. If this weren’t the case, sure, it’d be a more consumer friendly system. But of course it wasn’t done this way... track record for this year is upping the ante on predatory monetization. I’m beyond sick and tired of it.

Outfits is still an option then, since they are not bought from the Crown store.

The issue with outfits is the gold sink cost to them. Plus the outfit slots can't be bought for account wide making them a waste of crowns. Costumes can be worn are account wide are basically easy to switch into and out of and don't cost gold to dye or even put on and your not limited like you are with the outfit system . While outfits have to be put together, have to cost gold each time you switch outfit motif peices and dyes and are extremely limited because of the inability to buy outfit slots for account wide use. The outfit system is nice to have. But until they fix their flawed mistake of making the outfit slots per character buy instead of account wide. So I would have to go with costumes because of that. Outfit slots are not worth the 1500(Wtf) crown cost. Almost or over 15 dollars that can only be used on one character? That is very disgraceful to me. They would have to be account wide to be worth the buy.

I get costumes but I prefer outfits. And yes, I often wish I could wear half a costume and the rest are outfit pieces. The closest to that is to wear a costume hat but I don’t like most of them because they hide the hair.

Both have their place. I think costumes work best for full body, one piece items like gowns or robes where outfits work best when the pieces are separate for each part of the body.

I prefer costumes. They are a complete ensemble that has, on occasion, prompted me to create an alt to wear it because I am inspired with a backstory for that alt based solely on an amazing looking costume. I think ZOS does a great job creating them.

Side note I think this done on purpose by ZOS to sell more in the crown store.

Both, actually. I generally use outfits for combat/exploration and costumes for situtions that don't need armor, like fishing, visits to town...

Costumes are the only thing that you can wear and not have to see your guild's physical tabard. Until that changes, I'm stuck with costumes.

    Depends on the character.

Personally I think Zos sold them selves short with the costume being one piece but in the end our outfit design does not need the crown store (except for more slots) so we can save in the end.

With that said there are some interesting costumes available from the store and some we can obtain in game.

I'd like to be able to say outfits, but most of the outfits/armour styles are pretty meh in design and don't even fit my char, let alone flatter her.

Unless you have the default female build, which is pear shaped (small top half, bigger hips/bottom) for most races, most of the tops are not flattering across the bust (huge unibosom territory!) and/or add extra volume to the hips and/or backside.

Whereas, at least most of the costumes tend to have been better designed to fit your char's individual shape/size and can be worn while levelling.

@Starlock it is a system that allows players to mix & match motifs and color them allowing more variety and creativity in appearance. Also almost all of the motifs can be earned in game.

I prefer costumes bc they are more fitted while some Motif styles are very bulky and unflattering. Shoulder styles, Hip Pads and loin cloths in particular ruin too many styles to count that I would absolutely love otherwise. I keep lobbying for a toggle setting but eh...
