Why do you start with such high stats in this game?

What's the point? I remember seeing normal stats (around 1k starting stamina, health and mana I think) in the very early days of this game (or was it beta or something?), why did ZOS change that?

All players under level 50 are scaled to cp160, particularly if you gear is at or near your character level.

This way, you are scaled to enemies, as oppesed to enemies scaling to you.

Because with One Tamriel, ZOS abandoned the level-locking system that made zones obsolete and changed to battleleveling the whole overland world to CP 160. So you start with higher stats to conpensate for your lack of skills and gradually lose those bonuses as you level up and gain your own skills/attributes.

It has it's pros and cons. Personally, I appreciate not being locked to a set order of quests and zones while being able to quest with friends who weren't right at my level.

Varanis has the best explanation. Everything is essentially the same level and you are given a boost to that level.

ZoS multiplied all combat related stats by 10 after 1.6, to show incremental stat increases from the then new CP system. That's why screenshots before 1.6 seem to have very low stats.

More to the point: low level characters have very few passives and active abilities available, because they unlock as you level up.

Without the extra high stats to compensate, you would die A LOT.
Especially with some classes like Sorc, who don't get access to their class HoT ability until fairly late in the levelling process (lvl30+ or so).

Low stats would cripple new players and result in them dying a lot to the first mobs they meet, so most would get frustrated and leave.

In all fairness, the OP is talking about pre-One Tamriel when level 1 players fought level 1 mobs. Back then, you were on more or less equal level with the mobs you fought. If you went back to old zones, they'd be hilariously underpowered or incredibly overpowered if you tried to fight above your level.

Now, you are still on more or less the same level as the mobs...except there's much less variation. All the mobs are the same level, and so are you, with the only variation comes from whether you are being carried by battleleveling or are gaining your stats through leveling up.

I believe this is what the OP meant. Several years ago stats used to be much lower numbers than they are now.

Basically because of Tam one. Unfortunately it was poorly implemented and thought out. Its largely why the games progression system chases people away rather then retain them

Because everyone cried that they was dying to starting area adds and couldn't move forward in the game making 1tam roll in and *** the game up as we know it now to be

I wish zones wern't scaled to your level. It is cool and all when you can go anywhere you want but that kinda defeated the purpose of exploration for me. "I won't find new challenges so why bother? I'll just go and do quests in 3 adjacent locations to my alliance zone!"
