And there's really no need for a "rune" at all, which would require crafting system changes. I'd like to see a simple implementation as a new Spellsword weapon, which would take up both hands and count as 2 set pieces, equipping a one-handed sword model in the main hand and a glowy spell animation in the off-hand.
It would be really cool if the Spellsword functioned differently for each class, with unique class-specific off-hand animations. The skills could modify slightly for each class (like destruction staff skills change for each elemental staff). They could essentially make a hybrid weapon+class skill line where you channel your innate class magic through a Spellsword. This would be an amazing mechanic to play with, especially if they take the opportunity to fill some gap in everyone's toolkits.
There are a million other obvious creative skill lines they could do, but whatever it ends up being I just really hope that it benefits current characters. I don't want to see another class for a while.
I don't get how people can be for 1h+spell but against spellcrafting.
What exactly do you expect to equip into your other hand alongside a 1h weapon if not a spell? A spell that you would have to ... craft?

A 1h + rune weapon skill line will have an Ultimate and five active abilities - that is what you have equipped in your other hand.
