New PC player - Best input device(s)?

I am a recent convert from Xbox to PC. Having purchased a new MacBook, I decided to try ESO using a Windows 10 partition. I’m really liking it so far. I’ve been playing with an Xbox controller, though I’m questioning whether a keyboard might be better. Add-ons certainly seem less than ideal in gamepad mode. However, as a PC-gaming virgin, I am totally unused to WASD, but I am prepared to bite the bullet and get used to it if it works well.

As my laptop is raised, I’ve been using an old Apple Bluetooth keyboard with almost no travel; the action is really kinda horrible. I have been looking at gaming keyboards. Ideally, I would like something reasonably compact. What I am wondering is how much difference does a mechanical keyboard make? Also, if you use one, do you prefer clicky or quiet ones? Finally, is a tenkeyless keyboard fine for ESO or is the number pad indispensable?

Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully received :)

The best is whatever works best for you. For me, that's a gamepad, for others kb/m. Use both and decide for yourself. I'm a Mac user myself and can barely tolerate crummy WinTel keyboards and peripherals, so I can't offer much guidance on that front.

Yes but don't forget Xpadder that is a must.

Tenkeyless is absolutely fine for ESO. I have a tenkey pad on my keyboard but don't even touch it when playing this game.

As for mechanical keyboards? Fantastic, though expect to pay a bit more, naturally.

While I'm here, if you do decide to go down the mouse and keyboard route, I would suggest an MMO-style mouse. They're the sort with any where between 6-12 buttons on the side. Some people will say they are not essential, but I, like you, am a former console player and quite frankly, if you're used to controllers an MMO mouse will make a difference.

Personally I use a Razer Naga Trinity. A fair bit pricey, but absolutely brilliant bit of kit. There are other great options available that are much cheaper, but I myself wanted a mouse with easy button layout customisation and the Trinity does that stupidly well.

I use a standard keyboard and a Red dragon Perdition gaming mouse. The mouse has 12 buttons on the side plus an additional 3( over a normal mouse) on top. I have the side button mapped for wsad. So all movement is done with my right hand as well as a few other functions such as attack, block sprint . My left hand takes care of everything else.

Another thing i like is that i can still swap back and forth using the mouse or my keyboard to move without having to change anything. So if im playing Horse Simulator Online or collecting or running a bunch of dailies i can go back and forth to give my fingers a break. What i dont like is the keys on the side of the mouse are tiny hard keys and i have very fat thumbs. My wife has small hands and would do fine with being able to use every key without hitting other keys but then her hand is to small to properly grip the mouse. So its sort of a catch 22.

The setup works for fine for the amount i play( 2-3 hours a day max casual player) but i was doing some serious playing either 6 plus hours a day or trying to do something competitive or trials or HM or something all the time i would consider more options such as game pads and such.

I also have an xbox controller that i use when im feeling really lazy( usually collecting or something else that requires no precision). I havent used it in about a month but IIRC you can still use all the functionality of the keyboard with the controller. The keyboard is the default input device and the mouse the default pointer and everything else bases their mapping off those AFAIK. So a controller would be an alternate input method rather than a primary input method like it is on consoles.

Why would they want to go back to the same platform that left to a platform they like better and spend more money on a system that is going to struggle to play this game in another 2 or 3 years?

Am using a Razer Tartarus V2 gaming keypad.

I like that the keys (19 and a scroll wheel) are all within easy reach and in straight rows (4) and columns (5) and that your thumb can reach 6 more inputs (a 4 way joystick and 2 buttons). Buttons are definitely 'clicky' giving good sensory feedback when you press them.

My razer mouse is quite simple, with just 2 buttons under the thumb, of which I only really use one.

Whatever gives you the lowest latency between pressing a button, and seeing the action occur on your screen is always going to be the best.

Thanks for the advice. I started off on OS X but the Mac version was giving me problems so I went Boot Camp and Windows 10. I know what you mean about peripherals. I like sleek, but to be honest the Apple keyboard I have is horrible for gaming. I’m willing to sacrifice style for comfort and functionality :)

I was looking at Xpadder (and ReWASD) yesterday. Thanks for the recommendation!

I’ll definitely check it out. I like the idea of an MMO mouse. I’m just a little concerned about the size of my fingers too. Lol.

Not familiar with gamepads. They look like an interesting option, a bit like a rearranged one-handed controller. Intriguing.

I’ll be getting one of those bad boys Day One but I switched to PC because I wanted a busier EU server, and to be able to use addons. Not regretting my decision. Hopefully, I won’t!

Gamepad hands down, the hitboxes are more than large enough not to have issues with aiming, and several of the addons work with the controller ui. I can send you my controller setup if you are interested, even managed to squeeze the dressing room addon buttons onto it xD

Controller for playing and kb/b mouse for everything else. Bind a key to swap between them.

And to the people that are saying to use a secondary program, you do know the game has "sticky aim" in regular controller mode, right? Makes aiming much easier.

Hot key a button on your keyboard to swap between game pad and keyboard and use the Xbox controller to play and swap to the keyboard for menu’s and crap.

Easy. That way you won’t have to relearn how to move and fight.

    WIRED everything tho.

So does that mean you use a keypad in one hand and the mouse in the other then swap to keyboard for text input?

I’m liking the sound of this. I have an Xbox Elite controller with paddles and could use one for this function. Good idea!

To be honest, I’m so used to using a controller, I’m naturally gravitating towards using one if it is not disadvantageous. It’s what I know. Your controller setup would be helpful. Thank you :)

I had the G13 before and I was quite happy with it until it broke. Getting one now might be difficult/expensive . They're no longer made.

Here is the setup, i recommend the AUI addon so you can hotkey your quickslot wheel as well on your controller, I have up to 3 setups mapped on my controller as well for the addon Dressing room. This setup also doesnt murder your sticks like the default setup does. Right click and open in new window to see the full sized pic =) I am also including a video link of how to fix the turn speed on controllers so you are not turning like a slug attached to a bungie cable.

I wouldnt recommend putting it higher than 2.5 lol, youll be spinning so fast youll get sick xD.

I had the g13 for the longest time, and I switched from kb and m to controller for the simple fact you can relax far more playing with a controller, plus you can kite much smoother.

Why do ppl buy Mac´s for gaming when you can get a Gaming pc+workstation for much MUCH cheaper? :s:|

    But back to the topic...
Play with whatever floats your boat and with what you are happy. Wanna use a Controller? go for it. Keyboard+ mouse? why not. I survived a long time with a 20e keyboard and a 10e mouse so no need to spend 100s of your currency on that unless you rly rly want/need it. and as one above already said. Try to get everything wired. Cheaper and doesn't need to be recharged/ filled with new batteries all the time.

So yeah. Thats my input to this :P

Firstly, a gaming PC and a workstation sound suspiciously like two computers to me, both probably ugly and beige. Secondly, they don’t run MacOS, unless I build a Hackintosh. To be honest, the gaming is a bonus - my Mac is mainly used for work. I have used Macs for over 30 years, and I’m too old and too stubborn to change now :)

I did some research on keypads earlier. It seems a lot of people rate the G13, but as you said, it’s not easy to source now it has been discontinued.

Thanks a million for this. Lots of useful information. I’ll give it a try, for sure. Recently, replaced my v1 Elite with a v2. It has a shift key for more mappings. If it is recognised, it could add more flexibility. Thanks again!
