another batch of ideas:
- merchant does not have constant list of goods, it means that each player has their own list of goods (randomly generated), so you may be lucky enough to get something unique !
- after discovering and talking to merchant, internal system timer starts to countdown (10 minutes). after that period of time merchant disappears. Teleports to the void, and stays there 5 minutes. Then spawns in the random place.

Let's put aside the technical aspect and the problem with people just being annoyed by it after a while and have a chat about what is this trader supposed to sell? "Randomly generated goods" is a bit too vague for me.
I have a hard time coming up with something that is desirable enough to make people bother with all that hide-and-seek aspect but at the same time harmless enough to not affect the economy negatively.

It does not hide, he just travels. And we need him, not he us. We call him mechant, because we can buy goods from him, but he is more than merchant...Let's put aside the technical aspect and the problem with people just being annoyed by it after a while and have a chat about what is this trader supposed to sell? idk, just merchant with random inventory which may contain interesting stuff.
So you have no idea what is he supposed to sell? "Interesting stuff" is not a well thought out idea.
I've seen this done in other games and I'm not sure anyone really enjoys it, at least not after the first few weeks when the novelty wears off. It's a good way of driving traffic to fan sites so players can find out where they are, but I think that's the only benefit for the community over a regular merchant.
I'm not against it, and I certainly don't think it would be a bad thing for the game, but I also don't think it's a particularly interesting idea.
Can you imagine a hundred players flocking to that super rare NPC and crashing the zone? I can...
