Why is there a US and a EU server realm?

Hi and sorry for the maybe stupid question. I have only been playing ESO for 4 month but I wonder why is there a US and a EU server realm? Is it legal reasons because I cant see any time zone specific bound events. Or maybe its because of a resource issue or. I have many friends playing on the US realm and myself on the EU realm. I was recommended to start on the EU realm because my location is in Sweden. What would be the show stopper to merge it to one mega server.

Thanks!

Ppl connecting from the EU to the NA Server have a really big latency so we have our own Server to not have a contant ping over 150 (theoreticly but EU has also ping issues even tho i live 4 hours away from the mega Server.....)

Anyway, its always better to connect to the server wich is the closest to get the best connection possible.

When we talk about any other game this would be the correct answer...but..since we're playing ESO on ZOS potato servers it doesn't really matter. They could have the server located on a tiny leaking fisherboat in the middle of the atlantic ocean run with solar energy and it wouldn't be worse than it is right now - in fact when you think about it this is probably reality...shortages in sun light may explain last weeks login issues on the EU server  XD

There are NA Servers (meaning North American) and EU Servers (meaning European). There are no United States Servers.

When I was a kid the abbreviation u/s was used to mean "unserviceable". If there is a u/s Server I think we all know which one it is, and it's not any of the NA Servers.

As a general rule the further away you are from the server the worse your connection will be - meaning the game will run slower and there will be more risk of disconnecting. (There's a lot more factors too, like the quality of the cables, but that's the main one.) So since the major markets for this game are North America and Europe they put one server in the USA and one in Europe (Germany I think) and encourage players to connect to whichever is closest.

But there's absolutely nothing stopping you playing on the other server, just choose the one you want when you log in. However be aware that nothing is copied between servers and there is no way to have anything transfered from one to the other. Your characters, bank, guilds etc. are entirely seperate and maybe most importantly anything purchased in the crown store is server specific but your crown balance is shared (because that's linked to your account as a whole) so if you have 1000 crowns, log into the NA server and buy a 500 crown costume then switch back to EU you will be down to 500 crowns and won't have the outfit.

(Note: Anything purchased outside the game will be available on both, like ESO+ and expansion packs, it's just crown store items which are server-specific.)

Some people do choose to play on both servers because they have friends on both (or just because they want to), you just need to be aware one might have more lag than the other and you won't be able to share anything with your characters on the other server.

There is NA server not US.

Latency is a killer. Prime time from Europe to NA you are looking 300ms latency. That is 6 times higher than the average 50-55 I get from UK and Greece the last 5 1/2 years.

I've been playing for several years, and when I started out I did not realise there were two servers. So ended up on the NA server and living in the uk. Up to 100 fps and about 70 ping.

You can create characters on both servers with the same account, so last year I set up new characters on the EU server. Had to train a new Master Crafter and level to CP810 again, but it was a speedy process as I had done it before and knew what to do. Still have good fps on EU mainly 70 to 90, but ping is much worse - never drops below 100 and often 'red'. And of course the EU server is rather unreliable.

I'd suggest you start a few characters on the NA server. It may be 4500 miles further away but much better performance.

    Have fun out there.

I play in both servers. Lag is the same on both, exponentially increases at day peak times and events. PvP can be unplayable.

    Physics.
    Fiber is about 200kps.
    This translates to about 40-60ms

It would be very unfair to half(well honestly a third but we have no SEA server) the planet if you only had one server location.

No legal or territorial reasons that I am aware of. At least, not with PC. There might be with Console.

    Why not have one, then?

    1) Latency issues probably drove placement selection. No matter where they put it, even on a leaky boat in the middle of the ocean, there will be increased latency for someone if the server is not local.
    2) Making a single server (local to both NA and EU) with low latency probably costs more to design, develop, provision, and maintain than having two servers.
    3) As recent events have demonstrated, they have an upper limit to the number of players that can be logged into one server. The current software cannot handle any more. EU is at that limit. They cannot create a single server that can handle everyone who plays. Just addressing this limitation is costing the studio years of development.

It is possible you know to have one account and apprentices on both servers.

Khajiit has a little family over there so she always has one of her own on the test server, no matter which set of characters are copied that week.

more server more money. I would not have bought this game if i had a 200-300 Ping in best case.
I always feel with the Australian player, but i think they have not enough inhabitants for a separate server.

That's a different matter, though. The need for separate EU and NA servers comes from the fact that light speed simply isn't fast enough for us gamers. That those servers are treated as two completely separate entities is a business decision. Other games have account wide unlocks that apply to all servers.

The server group is located in Dallas, technically it is a United States server, although it services north America.

ZOS has enough trouble keeping a server on each side of the pond going. Imagine what would happen if there was one megaserver with everyone playing on it?

I have lots of Euro friends I play with on the NA server that are all from smaller countries because the big ones (France, Germany, UK, etc) will only allow people from their countries in their guilds. I thought that was interesting.

    Not really.

What is the case there is probably the language barrier, or better to say, they want to speak their native language when doing guild stuff and in the guild chat instead of English.
So main reason here for French or German guilds to accept only peeps from Germany or France is basically the language thing.

    No.

I encountered the same thing in when I played WoW. It’s not a language thing.

I play both and haven't had too much issues with connections on either. I actually get a worse connection in NA Cyrodiil than I do in EU. Also, EU, and this is my personal opinion, has a more courteous group of players.

Clearly it’s a Texan server not a US server *eyebrow wiggle*
