Crossbows (Prologue)

All this talk of ...crossbows... in the prologue...

can we please have cross bows added to the game as weapons? They would fit a dragon guard so much better than bows (they basically need something with a lot of piercing power vs scales)...and oh god i find crossbows so much more interesting and cooler looking than bows... and they are established in previous elder scrolls games...

it would allow for close up and ranged skills as well as magicka morphs and stamina morphs

just think of all the

net shot (immobilize)
electrocute shot (stun)
flame and poison bolts
grenade shot
aimed sniper shot to fracture and breach
scatter crossbow shot
etc. etc..it would be and look glorious

if we cant get weapons...can we at least get a cross bow looking bow skin or a crossbow skill line with an amazing looking dwarven crossbow?? ? ? ?

I did love the Crossbow in Skyrim, but i think people just really want it cause its the closest the game gets to having guns.

hmm not sure... i always just liked crossbows a lot more than bows in games because of the more intricate design and mechanical nature... bows are just always the most boring weapon to me... i just tend to like weapons more that arent THAT overused... and crossbows are established in elder scrolls and also ESO... and i do think they could be an interesting hybrid between magicka and stamina...

yes there is silver shards but a) the skill is hardly used b) its a very quick animation c) with a not very attractive looking crossbow...

We can't have new skill lines/weapons, the devs are working on re-writing the old combat system so... maybe if they need to sell a chapter or something
BTW, I agree, i'd love crossbows, and in general more weapons

They already stated it was only a mechanic for the prologue and used in murkmire. Don't expect a new weapon anytime soon.

With how fast DPS has to be in ESO, and how slow crossbows are by design, I don't think they would fit very well as DPS weapon. Now, if they figured out a way to make it a debuff/tankey weapon for breaking armor and such, perhaps.

...hell, why not give it utility as a stamina healer weapon. Have abilities that morph to shoot alchemical flasks or something that burst and heal allies, or healing darts.

The big problem I see is that it would always just end up too similar to the bow, and as others suggest silver shards already exists, no matter what you want to call the skills.

I'll tell you the real reason why it's unlikely.

They'd have to make a unique crossbow model for EVERY style... And if they want to keep up with the pattern of older motifs back from day 1... You could be looking at FOUR models for those racial styles.

    I don't see it happening.

Sword and spell though? Yeah, sure, as the one-handed weapon models already exist.

I remember watching Bethesda stream and the were saying that this grappling bow / crossbow / hook is new and stuff... but... but... we already had something like this in Murkmire.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHwX2uc4z4Q
(Skip to 0:42, as this is quite a long video)

Sure, it was only a mini game and you had to use it to get to some places to find lore books for the achievement or in the part of the main story to get through "path of the lily" to skip the shifting sands part of the swamp .

The point is, the only difference is animation. But I guess it is nice. Maybe it will be more polished mechanics somehow (although it really felt the same in the tutorial vs murkmire vines).

I hope they dont plan to put this in Cyro though. It would be a disaster... :*

    i dont think thats fair

you can say all 1h weapons are basically the same - why have different ones?

all staves are the same, why have different ones?

staves and bows are both ranged skills - why have them both?

crossbows i think can give a unique combination of stamina and magicka morphs as well as longer and shorter distance skills and a lot of utility

All 1 handed weapons either fall into sword and shield line or DW. Theres not a different skill line for each 1h weapon. And there is no bow passive that leaves room for different weapons providing extra crit, penetration, healing, bleed etc.

So what you’re saying is you want the bow line with slightly different effects for a few skills? That front seem to be what OP is asking for but that’s more plausible than an entirely new line for a ranged stamina weapons. Still unlikely to happen.

Not necessarily. They could make crossbow skills for single targets and bows for AoE/multiple target to differentiate between them.

In and of itself its a great idea. A crossbow skill line to be the "2H" version of bows, if you like, slower, more powerful etc.

However as I have commented elsewhere, and will continue to do so, stamina does NOT need another skill line. Magica does.

    Stamina:
1H/duel wield - swords, maces, axes, daggers
2H - swords, maces, axes, daggers
Sword +Shield - swords, maces, axes, daggers
    Bow

    Magica:
Destruction staff - fire, frost, shock (but not DIFFERENT weapons, its the same skins).

My idea is a tome/rune/scroll wielded in one hand while the other is free and actually does the "casting". Better yet have both tomes and runes/tablets/scrolls, just as stamina has swords, aces, maces and daggers.

Nice idea and some of the skill suggestions are interesting.

But in order to keep a realistic gap between crossbow and bow it would need to do much more damage but take a couple of minutes to wind up and fire.

Not much use except - wind up crossbow - enter room - fire crossbow - switch weapon...
