Rank Requirement for Learning Motifs

Ever since the outfit system was launched it is safe to assume that the vast majority of people buying/farming and in general using motifs are doing it for and in the outfit system and not actually crafting item in those styles. There are still a few reasons you'd want to craft them for but most times you wont. This, of course, isn't a bad thing at all it simply re-purposed motifs as a whole.

The new motifs understand this and have no crafting skill requirement as they are now no longer strictly bound to crafting and serve more as account wide cosmetic items, almost like costumes. There are, however, some motifs (the old ones) who still have these requirements. I find this to be an unnecessary annoyance at this point especially since the new ones getting released no longer have this requirement.

If people still believe that there should be a requirement for these motifs then I recommend that the requirement becomes to craft these motifs and not to learn them. Also before people start accusing me of being lazy and not wanting to level a crafter, I did.

What do you think? Is there any reason for the old motifs to maintain their requirements, or should they be removed?

I would say that some sort of crafting level requirement would actually be nice, just from a master writ perspective. Right now it’s tough to determine what exactly style has to do with the writ reward. If levels were introduced to motifs maybe then we could get some consistency.

But the base point why this won’t happen is the crown store. So you’re point about removing the old level requirements is valid.

I'd noticed that some exotic motifs have rank requirements but others don't, but I never made the connection with the outfit system and whether a given exotic style was introduced before or after the introduction of the outfit system.

It does seem crazy that I can learn some newer exotic style even though I'm still at rank 1 with a given character, yet I can't learn others until I've reached rank 9 or 10.

It also seems crazy that I can craft a Woodworking item in a given exotic style even though I'm still at rank 1 in Woodworking, just because I was able to finally learn that style after reaching rank 9 in Blacksmithing; that makes no sense.

I haven't tried to get all of my alt characters to the highest crafting ranks, so some of them have unlearnable motifs cluttering up their inventories until such time as they finally advance enough to learn them.

Finally, it makes no sense that you can learn a recipe at any rank, even though you might not be able to actually make that food or drink until you've attained a higher rank.

So, I'm all in favor of doing away with the rank requirements for learning motifs. If they want to keep the requirements, make them apply to crafting in that style or applying it to an outfit, not to learning it-- that is, make it work more like it does with Provisioning.

    Yup! My thoughts exactly!

Thank you for adding to my point.

One reason I haven't gotten into outfits yet is because of the cost for applying a style to a piece of gear. Not to derail your thread onto a tangent, but maybe they could change how that works, too-- like, charge you if you don't have the appropriate style mat, but don't charge you (or maybe charge a much smaller fee) if you do have the style mat.

IIRC, it is only the original 4 Purples that have a Crafting Level Requirement. Daedric, Barbaric, Ancient Elf, and Primal. Odd, since the Crown Store versions do not have these limits. Imperial might have a limit too. I did not finally find that until a couple months ago.

It is a hold over from the Leveled days, where you could not even find the motifs unless you were of the correct level.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I remember others having it as well, xivkyn for instance.

Did not know about those other, my master crafter was not level constrained when she learned them.

What is really odd is an L3 can use any known motif by an alt. They really need to remove these requirements.
