Is There Any Advantage To Diff Armors By Class?

I see NBs and Sorcs using heavy armor. So is there any advantage to any class/race using anything other than heavy armor? If so, it is by no means "well documented".

    PvP or PvE?

Uh, yeah, there are advantages. Light armor helps with magicka abilities and medium armor helps with stamina and stealth.

WTF is going on lately with this sudden surge of people thinking classes should be locked away into certain roles and arbitrarily restricted to only what is stereotypically assigned to that role? Heavy armor for the DKs who can only ever tank. Leather for the NBs who can only ever backstab. Lacy dresses for the Sorcs who can only ever throw lightning bolts. Etc.

Class isnt really the determining factor in what weight of armor you wear.

Your Role is primarily what determines what weight of armor you wear. For example, my MagDK wears Heavy Armor as a PVE Tank. But in PVP, my MagDK is a Healer, and wears Light Armor (I used to wear Heavy Armor when I was new to PVP, and now that I know how to play much better, I have roughly the same survivability in Light.)

As a very general rule of thumb:
    PVE Tank: Heavy Armor
    PVE Stamina DD: Medium Armor
    PVE Magicka DD: Light Armor
PVE Healer: if magicka based, Light Armor

PVP Brawler: Heavy Armor, rarely Light or Medium if you have excellent other sources of defenses
PVP Glass Cannon: Light or Medium Armor
PVP Support: usually Heavy or Light Armor, depending on what type of support you bring

Especially in PVP, there's a lot of flexibility in what armor works for your build and that can change every patch. With Scalebreaker's DOT meta, its not that surprising that classes that lean towards the Glass Cannon playstyle like NBs and Sorcs may be leaning towards the tankiness of heavy armor this patch.

Other than the selections of the passives, I'm not seeing the advantages of one armor over another for any character. To me, this has been part of the steady decline in ESO in homogenizing everything.

How can it be a decline when it's always been that way?

Passives and the armour rating have always been the only difference between armour sets, it's not like there used to be more and they changed it recently.

Personally, I assume its old school ESO players longing for the days when the only tanks were DKs, the only healers were shard-spamming Templars, and we had softcaps so the whole "magicka/stamina" thing wasn't a big deal.

The game was simpler at that point, but not necessarily better.

That would certainly explain things if it were true.

not well documented? is that why people make certain builds for a class and tell you what is BiS?
