Do you automatically get DLC on chapter purchase?

How do DLCs correspond to chapter purchases? If I buy the Elsweyr chapter, do I also unlock (alongside Morrowind and Summerset chapters) all DLC released prior to Elsweyr, or do I just get the three chapters and no DLC? If the former, do I get all the DLC released before my purchase, or just those DLC released before Elsweyr?

Chapters do not include any DLCs. They are all sold separately.

Mostly correct. There is (was?) a pack of four early DLCs in the Crown Store (I think it was Imperial City, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Shadows of the Hist) but that's pretty much it. I can't remember any other bundles being available.

ESO+ does not include any chapters. So yes, everyone has to buy them separately.

Although all of the old chapters are converted to DLCs once the new one is released. So for now you will have to buy Elsweyr but Summerset and Morrowind will be included as DLCs.

The only DLC that unlock are the ones specifically mentioned in the package you’re buying.

So the “full” release of Elsweyr (not the upgrade) contained Summerset and Morrowind. (Morrowind is now included in any new base game purchase as of last year.)

You do not get any dungeon DLC (Shadows of the Hist, Wolfhunter, Dragon Bones, etc.) or any zone DLC (Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, etc.) aside from that. Access to these is included in ESO+.

A subscription includes Crowns (1650 per month, paid when you pay for the subscription) that you can use to purchase the DLC outright, although it will usually take a month or a month and a half’s worth of crowns per DLC. So you could subscribe to try all the DLC and then decide which you want to purchase. The sub also includes other features, too: extra gold, XP, crafting inspiration, extra bank/housing space, and the unlimited crafting bag. It’s up to you if you feel it’s worth it. Usually there are several free trials of ESO+ per year - but the crowns are not included as part of the trial.

ETA: you do get to keep some things that you can unlock during a free trial or sub period. If you unlock the Blade of Woe from the Dark Brotherhood line/DLC, you can still use it after your trial or sub is over - but only on the character(s) you unlocked it on. You cannot progress in a DLC-locked skill line until you re-sub or buy the DLC.

I would recommend starting with the Gold Edition of the base game when it is on sale (often for around $24.99) - b/c it comes with Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood (all of which are essential IMHO). Then buy the upgrade version of Elsweyr that comes with Morrowind & Summerset. The only thing you would need to purchase later would be crowns (when 40% off) - so you could buy new character slots & Clockwork City when it goes on sale during the yearly event. You’ll have a decade of playing ahead of you!

No, ESO Plus only unlocks dlc zones. Chapter zones are separate completely and must be purchased.

Ok...it seems like you don't understand the terminology used for ZoS on what a "chapter" is meant to be and "DLC".

Chapter means that even as ESO+ subscriber you need to purchase that to have access to the last Chapter, older "Chapter" will then be degraded into "DLC" which means for ESO+ subscribers they will have access to that content like all other DLC content. That is why ZoS decided to rename what in other MMOs will classify as an "expansion".

As Elsweyr right now are the last "Chapter" you will need to purchase that to get access to (Northern) Elswyr. Depending how it is being marketed it will also give you ownership to other chapters or as part DLCs. Southern Elsweyr is soon to become public on Live server as an DLC. As for story line you should probably have both Northern and DLC (dungeon) related to fighting Dragons to get the story in order to the final part of the story line.

If you open Crown Store window in game you will find a section where find quest staters among other there you can also see if you have to buy to get permanent access (sometimes during events you can get DLC as part of that event like Imperial City event or Summerset) or you just have access as an ESO+ subscriber.

FYI if you already have base game (account on PC), then you can purchase Chapters as Digital Edition directly on site. There is a base version and a Collection Edition (CE) which have some extra material as mounts, gear or something that can be worth to take look on before deciding which is worth your money.

In the case of Morrowind as Chapter you did get access to Warden as class, as DLC you need to purchase both as Crown store items. Same for Elsweyr (as long it is a Chapter - you get also Necromancer as class), when it will become a DLC you need to purchase Necromancer as class in crown store.
