Merchant character - tips

I know that in MMOs it's normal to have "crafting alts", who just stand by the crafting stations and to the crafting for the rest of the adventuring characters. I want to take that char and build on it. I want to create, and roleplay, a merchant and crafting character. That means someone who will:

- Farm all crafting mats
- Become proficient in all crafting vocations
- Explore for items worth selling
- Be knowledgable about what is worth selling and what is not (which, of course, means that I have to be on top of the market)

Of course, any char can do this, but I want to also add some roleplaying into this. I thought of an Imperial, but they don't have the mercantile bonus they had in previous TES-games. They are still known as merchants, though, so still a good option.

Any tips about class? Any class will do, of course, but I want something that will make my character workable as an exploration character, so she needs to be able to hold her own in PvE. PvP and trials not needed here. I don't want her to be a thief, either. I know that is profitable, but I already have a thief char for that.

Any ideas, both practical and roleplaying-wise?

I made my crafter with a similar mindset, though she does indulge in a bit of thievery (she's a Bosmer, it's in her blood).

I went with Warden, since I knew most of my skill points will be going to my crafting needs I wanted a class that could be effective with minimal combat focus, and I figured the bear would help with that. It has.

She's more Hunter/gatherer themed than merchant. She carries a bow and her look is sort of my interpretation of a cross between the Thief and Ranger jobs from the Final Fantasy universe.

That's a good idea. Maybe I will create an Imperial Warden. Why not?

The best kind of Merchants are those with fur and a Tail.

From purely roleplaying perspective... I frankly would choose a sorc. ^^

Why... it's just associations in my head. Say... necromancer? That implies that shady connection with necromantic arts (which you should have learned from somewhere - again, somewhere shady), doesn't play well with a peaceful trader profession. Warden? Again, connotation - it pulls upbringing into the picture, the 'unity with nature' and all that, it affects background. Same goes for nightblade, say, though it probably would fit some kind of traders; but again, it affects background too much for it to sit right in my head. DK would be irrelevant to the vocation of choice. And sorc... in my head is a 'lightweight' magician, and it plays well with a trader with some knowledge of magic; why not entertain kids at a fair with some magical tricks or whatnot.

Ultimately, if you can meld a class with your background and story in organic way, anything goes.

(And yes, totally agree with fur and tail. Everything is better with fur and tail. ^^)

I went for Imperial Stamplar Medum Armour Ranged DPS. Medium Armour for faster movement and ranged to kill enemies as fast as possible.

Imperials are knows for their mercantile skills, and she isn't bound to be loyal to any faction, house, guild or province.

My thoughts were House Hlaalu and some form of sorc or necro with a love of alchemy and poisons as her first skill set.
