Melee Distance: Too Far Out?

This comment is from a PvE perspective. It seems that melee distance in ESO is really off i.e. way too far out. My opponent and I can have more than a full body length between us, but yet, I still get smacked by a seeming invisible weapon. The same is true for fighting creatures. For example, I back away from a senche lion's paw swing by a healthy distance, and the paw connects regardless. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I'm just not sure if the melee distance is at fault, server lag, or perhaps a combination of both.

If an attack animation starts, if it isn't a charge attack or an aoe projectile, it will also connect unless dodge rolled.

You kind of have to have it both ways. In my experience, it feels like the melee damage/skills have gained some distance. I can see why the lion's paw example would be frustrating, as I too have been hit by a melee strike that I was clearly outside the colored area of.

That is not to say it is all bad. If you run vHRC, you are thankful the distance was extended when the first boss goes into his spin attack. You can stand outside the radius and still connect with your melee skills and not have to dance around and create more whirlwinds. Without that gain in distance, stamina characters would be pointless to run in that trial

Are you a DK perhaps? DKs get extended melee range compared to other classes.

    RP-wise: definitely.
Gameplay wise: it's not big enough.

yes not realistic at all. How can you hit a target at 5-7 meters away?? Realistically a big sword can barely touch its target at 2 meters away, but i get dizzied from 7 meters away

Imagine trying to compare the real world (in which, btw, a zweihander used properly can reach more than 2m away) with a
    videogame in 2019.

The longer range of melee attacks is a lot more obvious in 3rd person. If we were being realistic, my Stam Sorc using daggers and Rapid Strikes would have to practically be right on top of her enemy (which, incidently, is an actual targeting problem that can happen in PVP.)

But I gice short shrift to the realism argument in a video game where I can cook every food or drink in the world by stirring the same bowl a couple of times and licking my finger.

I don't mind the somewhat generous melee range because it means my range to bash/interrupt is a bit generous too.

I often get hit in PVP by DK whips while generously more than 15m away...😒

Perhaps lag? Maybe. Is it lag when it's consistent? Not likely.

No DK uses whip from 15 mts, although it is a lash and it should have that range. I've never seen Dr. Jones using his whip face to face to the guy carrying the sword.

As I have stated, probably due to lag. However, I have experienced instances where I have been gently touched by those fiery whips at an approximate distance to be said as "exceeding" melee range.
    An example follows:

Average Templar here just standing on enemy resource flag, patiently awaiting it to flip. Out of nowhere (really from the keep) comes an over-aggressive Dragonknight who enters the dance of combat by tactically spamming his Talons and Fossilize (not very tactful when you rely on perma-stun/root gameplay). As the Templar gracefully retreats for LoS into the Tower nearby at speeds granted by Expedition he dies upon reaching the second to top stair of the first staircase. In the Recap are excessive amounts of Whips. Templar thinking to thyself, "But how?! I was so far away during my retreat and upon camera turn entering the stairs that Dragonknight was just only then entering the Tower..."

Hope you love the commentary. Happens frequently on Xbox :D

15 mts is too much but again, it can be due to syncro issues. Or you were playing DoS 2 (kidding)

At least in PC and with a very poor ping, I've never seen any DK using 15 mts whips. 10 mts can be the apparent top distance I've seen it as higher and in very laggy situations. In any case it is better to record something like that and report it.

Some mmorpgs have this game engine where an enemy can hit you even if on your end you moved 10 feet away before the attack animation finished, because all the server cares about is calculating a hit.

In Secret World I was seeing damage numbers before the animations of being hit even appeared.

If we're talking realistically, magic abilities don't exist at all, melee or ranged. It's a slippery slope to talk about reality in a fantasy based mmo.
