When tanking, I always end up chasing a mob I tought it was taunted, but turns out a mob around took the pierce armor hit for him, the only way to prevent this is to use tab target, but cycling between targets before taunting is annoying.
What if we make ransack/pierce armor something like this:
- Make it a cone, but only taunt 1 enemy inside won't fix your problem, because many enemies around, and u need to taunt a specific one
- prioritize the one with out taunt thats plain silly. And will f*** everyone up in a lot of dlc fights
- if there are more than 1 with out aggro, select the one with highest offensive stats content that is run with two tanks exist, therefore, no
- if tab target is active, give priority to the targetted enemy wait... Doesn't it work like that already? Not sure, but if it doesn't, it should
- OR -
- Make the cone very very small but taunt all enemies inside the cone said it once will say it again, eso doesn't need mass taunt
- OR -
- Make frost wall of elements taunt enemies inside the areasee previous comment, also, frost wardens exist

Im aware of those problems, however you are looking at the list in a wrong way, im not saying "Choose one"... try putting all of these together at the same time, and watch all the problems you described dissapear

It would save resources and time is it lazy? Ok maybe? But it would also be highly beneficial
No offense but experience plays a big role in developing the skill in both making sure the taunt hits the correct target and how to handle each group of mobs so you are not chasing them around.
I am not trying to come off as condescending but just noting we all start off trying to figure out how to approach mobs and fights. The game was designed with the idea that we only had a single target taunt and that the tank is not intended to tank every trash mob in a dungeon.
