Maintenance for the week of January 5:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – January 5
• NA megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)

Got lag? It might not be just the ESO sever.

The day Update 23 landed, my average ping increased about 35% with a drastic increase in spikes to around 400-600ms. I have been through this before and have spent many hours trying to diagnose the issue, only to come back to some update ZOS performed to set it off. Earlier this year ZOS resolved the exact issue I'm experiencing now since U23 in an update sometime around March. After that update my ping returned to the 90-120 range.

Not to shade on the OP as this issue from Microsoft can indeed affect ALL computer performance. But when a specific issue, and the resolution thereof, repeatedly coincide with ZOS updates, you can pretty well be certain the issue lies on their end. Given all the performance complaints, it's pretty obvious they keep piling on an already overloaded system. Hopefully the ensuing performance updates in the coming quarters will have some positive effect.

At the end of August, a new Windows 10 update deployed. This is an optional update called KB4512941 (for build18362.329) meant to fix several bugs. Some users who have installed this new Windows 10 update are running into severe performance issues and if you feel like your Windows 10 is suddenly slower, you might want to uninstall it.

    Any other insightfuls?.

    +1 take an awesome

Thank you very much for this info! Since I have been noticing an intermittent lag issue for sometime now, and the lag issue only happens with this game, this patch causing any problems would be separate issue for me. Unfortunately for me the latency has been horrible for a couple of months now and the only post I have seen that explains it would be the one about the Akamai (sp?) DDoS service having high latency. Not to say I won't be uninstalling this patch, I mean why take the chance, but I think something else is going on.

Update KB4512941 is listed as an "optional update" for me. Just make sure you don't download and install it.

As reported by Windows Latest, the new Windows 10 update is causing large CPU spikes (30-40%) for some users who have installed it. Some users are even reporting 90% CPU usage and you can see some of the reports here and here. This is reportedly due to a buggy version of Cortana shipped with the latest update and you will see SearchUI.exe taking up way too much of your CPU resources.
I have Cortana disabled. Also, what @Kel said. Unless the issues are experienced only by very few people, the prime suspect should be ZOS. Not your machine, not your add-ons, not your Internet connection. When entire groups get disconnected at the same time, when multiple people crash to the desktop at the same time, those are indications that the game code is at fault.

There are a variety of things that can impact performance, and not all platforms and locations are going to share them.

@xeha_arwen11 Exactly. I had the occasional lag here and there when Summerset came out, but that was mostly PVP or confined to HRC, and even then you could almost predict when it would hit as it was high traffic times (NA server). After Elsweyr, the game is a mess. All of those issues you listed I encounter on a regular basis.

Overland questing has become laggy. VMA is a nightmare. But the biggest offender is Sunspire. Its almost funny how many glitches you encounter in there, if you are one of the lucky people who are able to breach its impenetrable port in.

So true. VMA has an unbelievable amount of problems now, Sunspire is atrocious, and when I do Cloudrest I've crashed multiple times trying to get into that trial as have many of my trial-mates. Problems seem to be piling up more and more. There's a lot to enjoy in this game so it's quite upsetting that things have gotten to this state.

I've heard rumors that ZOS isn't really doing anything more than slapping band-aids on ESO for consoles as the next generation consoles are coming out in a year or two. Still, doesn't mean they have to make the current version worse

    Cool...

Explains nothing about the rampant lag on console in relation to the servers, but eh....this is something.

The consoles aren't suitable for this game thats why. Since moved to Xbox One X, lag like 80% decreased, FPS drops only on major seige battles, crashes maybe 2 in the last 3 months.

The servers isn't the end of all means and the holy grail

    no

I noticed a performance decrease after the latest windows update. I turned off some features at startup for NVidia Graphics card, and performance seemed to return to normal. Then started having issues again a few days later. Disabled Cortana and now performance is much better. Thanks for the info!

It's pretty evident that there are issues on the server side, if only due to the number of transactions the server is having to manage at the same time. This is easily seen by trying to do something (walk from point A to point B, for example) in a location that's densely populated with other players, then trying to do that same something in a location that's practically barren of other players.

But yes, other processes running on the computer, as well as other activity over your internet connection, can also have a noticeable impact. One of the worst aggravations that I've run into is when Windows Defender decides to launch a virus scan while I'm trying to play. This can cause the computer to become sluggish or unresponsive, and in rare cases I've even had it crash my games (I think) because some file that the game needs to access is currently being scanned so the game can't read it or write to it (as I said-- I think; no definite proof that that's what caused the crash). And with everybody and every device in the house being connected to the WiFi-- computers, tablets, phones, smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV Sticks, Amazon Echos, Bose Soundwaves, etc.-- it can be difficult to rely on a steady internet connection.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!
