While slotted, what does it actually mean?

I am a bit confused. I am reading/watching tips for ESO and some where, somehow I think some people say different things. "While slotted" I thought it ment while on the current bar, you get the passive ability. Then I can't remember when or where, I thought someone said "while slotted" it can be on any bar just once.

So for example I think it's called Mages Light, you get magika increase. If it's on bar 1 and I am on bar 2, do I still get the benefit?

Is "while slotted" and "when slotted" different meanings and that is why I am so confused?

Please help and explain.

I get why it's confusing. and it really should be "while on your active skill bar". Because that's the only time you get the bonus.
This is true, not just for skills but for set effects too.
So if you have 2 diff sets on, and you have a staff from set 1 and a 2 handed sword from set 2. You don't get the set bonus from set 2 when wielding the staff from set 1. And vice versa.

You can however create nice hybrid builds this way that mean you switch your whole fight style depending on if you are using skill bar 1 or 2 (or 3 in case of werewolf).

    Hope this helped.

That does help. Thank you very much.

The way I am seeing it (forgot to mention it) "while slotted" means to me, it can be on any bar, since it's slotted. That means another passive ability can't be used because it's not slotted so shouldn't matter if on bar 1 or bar 2. Takes up a slot, being used or not.

I guess Zenimax Online means "slotted" means slotted on current bar being used.

If you can look down at the bar and see the skill, its slotted

Thanks. Thing is, my thinking for some strange reason by saying what you did, that would mean all other skills are not slotted, so therefore nothing on bar 2 is slotted either. Thing is, bar 2 is slotted, just not being used. So technique bar 2 is slotted but not active.

I guess when I read, "don't need to activate" to get passive power, you still need to "activate" it by being the current active slot.

English. No wonder it's the second or third hardest language to read and understand. :) Then again, Bethesda has confused me with what words mean now as well. :D

When it says "don't need to activate" it means, don't need to use the skill, for the effect to activate. As in, you only need to have it on active skill bar, you don't have to click the skill on top of that.

Bethesda has a weird way of saying stuff even for good english speakers. Its not just you, who gets tripped up by this.
I didn't figure this bit out till i started using addons and they showed active buffs on my toon on the UI.

That's what I always thought as well.

If I can see it on my "active" bar, its "slotted", if not, then its of no concern, passive-effect wise.

    What’s even worse:

“While slotted” means it must be on your active skill bar.

But “unique-equipped” applies to weapons/shields on *either bar*...

Honestly I don’t even know why unique-equipped things are still in the game. There’s no rhyme or reason as to what’s unique-equipped (and it’s not the name - there are named, “unique,” things that are not “unique-equipped”).

At least it makes some sense that a skill or set piece must be on your active bar to be considered to be in effect, although the terminology could definitely stand to be clarified.

I forgot which skill it is, but I found out that one passive skill at least, from sorcs, counts for both bars.

I "knew" slotted meant active bar, until I had this passive counting both bars. This sorc passive has a multiplier based on how many skills from a line you have slotted, and it's doesn't matter if front or back bar. Same isn't true for NB passives, for example. May be a tooltip bug, may be a full on oversight too.

For the most part, though, it goes front bar only.
