So, a recent Kotaku article kinda made me wonder... everyone is screaming about the meta, best in slot, how to max out DPS... and they're spending hours analyzing and tweaking to be top/best performers... What about those of us who just want "good enough" because we got other things to do and only a handful of hours throughout the week to play this game?
Since the recent patch has shaken things up (again/as usual), I figured this would be a good time to pose this question to the community: What are YOUR "Dad Builds?"
Dad Builds consist of the following criteria:
- Easy to obtain.
- Easy to use.
- Good power/perks.
- If PvP is considered, holds its own.
If it's not generalized (i.e. good for all/multiple races/classes), include Race/Class selections as well for the build. Tell us a bit of your experience with the build, too.
Remember: This is NOT chasing the meta. Leave that to the experts.
My "Dad Build" --
Race: Any
Class: Any
Type: Magicka (most stats boost this attribute)
- 5-Piece Rattlecage (Dungeon Set: Vaults of Madness)
- 5-Piece Law of Julianos (Crafted Set: Wrothgar)
- Head/Shoulders: Whatever. I started with Torug's Pact for spell damage (Crafted Set: Grahtwood/Stormhaven/Deshaan). Later I went with two mismatched Monster Sets (whatever gave me spell damage). I eventually acquired Mighty Chudan (Monster Set: Ruins of Mazzatun) but only by purchasing the helm when it was for sale at the weekend vendor. Because it was faster to save up a few hundred thousand gold over time than get good at Veteran Ruins of Mazzatun (Seriously, I got dinner to cook here...)
The goal of this build is simple: Power without maintenance (because I'm lazy... and too cheap to fuel a potion addiction). Rattlecage grants Major Sorcery, which bolsters the power provided by Julianos. Mighty Chudan also grants Major Ward and Major Resolve, which boost defenses that are otherwise lacking a bit (plus 1-piece defense bonuses and some extra health). Vaults of Madness is one of the easier dungeons to run with friends (and I did so a LOT until I got two Omen's Edge swords and a restoration staff for the back bar, but it was fun times even on Veteran)
I run this on an Orc Templar, and my play style is basically "Red Mage" -- I have good damage output to supplement heavy-hitters, good healing potential to keep people up in a pinch, and decent survivability to minimize those one-hit-wonders... but I am a master at none of them.
I'm usually tossing Puncturing Sweep plus whatever DoTs I feel like layering (when I remember to), using Breath of Life or Orbs (Undaunted) to heal, Meditate (Psijic) if I need to replenish a bit (this build doesn't have the best sustain), and Radiant Glory to help melt stuff at the end. Stabbies and Radiant heal me as I go, which I also like for survivability -- especially in crowds. Again, resource sustain isn't the best, so backing off to Meditate or heavy attack with my Restoration staff is necessary. I do okay, though.
Addendum: I should add this is not at all designed for PvP, and I tend to get squashed if another player focuses on me.
