Maelstrom Destruction Staff Effects

So i just finished my first run of vMA (My god does it suck). I was lucky and got the lightning staff and two daggers, and i'm wondering if the Maelstrom Destro staff's set effect remains active for the entire duration of Wall of Elements, even if i switch to my other bar.
My AoE DoTs are on my back bar with my Maelstrom Staff, but i also want the effects of my Mother's Sorrow set when i switch to the spammables on my front bar.
(Side note: What an absolute pain. I am never doing vMA again. I have never gotten so infuriated and stressed by a video game, and I've played the entire Dark Souls franchise...)
