Boss killed while you're dead

If you're fighting a boss with other players-- whether you're grouped with them or not-- and the boss is killed while one or more of the players are dead or in the process of resurrecting, do those players get credit for the kill, too? The reason I ask is because I've been grouped with players where we were fighting each of the WBs in a zone, and one or more players somehow "missed" one or more bosses even though everyone else in the group got credit, and I figured it was because they were dead or resurrecting when the boss took the killing blow, even though they'd landed lots of hits before the boss or minions killed them. I've never had that problem myself, but whenever I help a random player kill a boss, or if another player joins me while I'm soloing a dolmen or boss, I always stop and stand there a bit if they get killed, to wait for them to finish resurrecting, before I resume attacking the boss, just to be sure they get credit for it. Should I keep doing that, or is it okay to just keep attacking and maybe kill the boss while the other player(s) are resurrecting?

I’ve always got credit for a boss kill in a group or not if I got a hit in before dying. In a group however I have noticed that I don’t get credit on a boss kill if I am too far away from the other players when the boss is killed. Happened to me when I was in IC and I was taking a flag with some in a group while others were down the street killing one of the IC bosses.

If you got a hit on the boss before dying then you're good. There might be some nuisances with being in a group and you might have to be within a certain distance of the boss to still get credit, but if you get a hit on the boss then you should be golden.

Certain bosses only give loot to the top DPS players though (i.e. Molag Bol in sewers), but dungeon and trial bosses do not behave that way.

I took my level 13 to Elsewyr and saw that people were fighting a dragon, I died just seconds before the dragon went down. Still got credit and the Xbox achievement. I don't remember what took me out, up until I died I was doing okay and could see the health on the dragon slowly falling.

Hmm, that's interesting; I never thought of it as possibly being a distance thing, but that makes sense.

In fact, I think I may have occasionally gotten credit for killing a boss and completing a delve even though I hadn't yet had a chance to land a blow, because someone else was already fighting the boss when I ran up. I got credit for completing the delve, but I couldn't loot the boss, so I had to wait there a while for another player to come along and respawn the boss.

Well unless something has changed, it never used to work this way. Unless you were in a group, of course. But if you were solo and you did not get a hit on the Delve boss, you'd have to wait until the next spawn to get it. This was evident during anniversary events when you had to kill Delve bosses....those a-holes doing direct damage attacks on a Delve boss with like 100k health and lower level players not getting credit because it'd drop so fast.

Good point. There might very well be a difference between the quest associated to the delve (the one that marks the delve as complete) versus the anniversary quests that were like 'Kill a Delve boss.'

Its one exception. If group is very large as in more than 12 players who can happen during events you have to do 8% of damage on boss, healing also count, this both if actual group or just an bunch of players who is not grouped.

However if grouped and less than 12 players in group you get credit if close enough even if not doing damage.

There are a few Delves where if your near the boss when it dies, you can get credit. Near means line of site or the same room. This is not normal, and it usually gets fixed in a patch. Then gets unfixed by another patch.

Best advice, if you see someone fighting a boss you need, spam light attacks until you get into range to use skills or your normal rotation.

If you miss it, most Bosses respawn in 5 minutes. If you are doing a Daily Quest that needs that boss, respawns happen even faster.

Public Dungeon Bosses are also on a 5 minute timer, but respawns can depend on if other bosses in the Public Dungeon are being killed. So, if you are camped on a boss and it is taking more than 5 minutes, go kill another one. And maybe another one or two.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I guess the bottom line is that I'll keep doing what I've been doing, just to be safe-- if I'm soloing a boss and someone comes along, or if I'm answering someone's call for assistance, I'll stop fighting if they get killed and wait for them to finish resurrecting before I continue fighting, especially if the boss is near the end of his/her/its health.
