Dummies and testing staff trait dps

Hi all,

I mostly heavy attack with a lightning staff. To get the 170% damage bonus from concussion and off-balance I use shock enchant and charged trait on the staff. I've read that good healers are supposed to be applying this, but I figured in PUGs I can't count on that. I was wondering if you can test concussion and off-balance on a dummy or if they're "immune" to those effects?

My whole build is around max heavy attack damage so I'm using Undaunted Infiltrator, Infallible Mage, and I want to use the Maelstrom lighting staff to get the 3rd heavy attack bonus from enemies inside my wall of elements. And if I can trigger concussed and off-balance as well, I figure my heavy attack damage will be crazy high. So I want to test the theory on a dummy if it's possible. The test results will only be accurate though if the damage done on the dummy will reflect all my bonuses including the 170% heavy attack bonus from the dummy being off-balance sometimes.

If I can test successfully all the buffs from charged then I can compare infused or whatever other traits people think will give me the best overall dps for lightning staff heavy attacking with a maelstrom staff on a single bar.

Off balance has a limited maximum uptime of like %25 of the time. I used that build for a while. It’s not bad. Max DPS I was able to bet with it was right around 46k. Witch to me is still pretty good. Others might argue.

Where are you getting that uptime number from? I'd like to see something that describes it. If it's that low then maybe alternatives are better. But also my question was whether you can test that on a dummy. Do you have any idea?

It’s currently 5s off-balance duration, and bosses and dummies have a 20s cooldown/immunity (so 15s downtime). Regular enemies do not have this cooldown and you can get nearly 100% uptime.

With the Scalebreaker patch they are increasing the off-balance duration to 7s, so bosses should be able to have 7/20=35% uptime (although it could be 7/22=32% if it’s the 15s downtime that remains constant not the 20s cooldown, I’m not sure).

Ok then thank you. The answer, based on what you said, is that it can't be tested reliably on a dummy to get similar results to what I'd have in the real world fighting mobs. So I'll test there.

I would suggest it is not an issue with overworld trash mobs as the fight should be pretty short to begin with. Just a guess but I expect the average player can kill a pack of trash mobs in 20 seconds.

There are a couple Ice Atronach World bosses in the game. Those were our target dummies for the first part off the game. Use a stop watch if you do not have a DPS METER.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Yes I can kill a mob in spellscar for example in maybe 5-seconds or less I"m guessing. It's just the giant ice guy with 200k hp that takes a few seconds. The rest just melt in my AOE really quickly, but that's getting nerfed in the update soon. We'll see what happens. With the AOE nerf, getting the off-balanced maxed out so my heavy attacks hit as hard as possible may be even more important. I'll probably test infused also since I see a lot of people recommending that for lightning staff with shock enchant. Other options are nirnhoned or precise. I don't think I'll try sharpened as if I need more pen I'll get it from CP.

I may test on the Dreugh King world boss as there is a mob around him as well. So I can test DPS on that fight and it actually lasts a good amount of time so should be more indicative of a real world fight where I can get an accurate picture of the effect off-balance will have since a dummy won't show me that.

I have an add-on that claims to calculate dps from fights. Hopefully it's accurate.
