The introduction of character customization (not character body creation) in video games, first single player and very quickly mmorpgs, shooters and mobas, the swift to older player audience that has a solid income but not too much free time, I start to velieve that gaming developers are forced to invest in vanity projects rather than "under the hood" maintenance, game features and mechanics, challenging content, unique playstyles (active combat, not theorycraft).
Subscription only business model cannot yield as much money as an ingame shop.
In eso people spend crazy dollars to decorate their gaming experience in a world that does not require much progressing time, does not require players to play as many hours as other mmorpgs. But there you have it. Ingame stores sell.
What would motivate big studios to go ahead and create a richer game, when riches are found in vanities?
How would smaller studios that focus on the game rather than ingame store, manage to attract large number of players with subscription business models, and manage to pay for capable servers and maintenance?
I just dont see the real mmorpg experience coming back anytime soon.
PS. It doesnt make sense for eso to have performance issues with player houses for 4 -5 digit crowns plus kittens and puppies
