Why can't i take the vMA quest again after abandoning?

abandoned it while inside, went outside, changed to normal mode, went in, quest is available.
went outside, changed to veteran, went back in and quest isn't available to take. the npv just talks about the next arena as if i still have it in my journal.
I've logged out and back in too.
what else should i try? I should have been able to take it again by now
