Do you feel like ESOs engine is limiting the game?

Well, I was pondering this very question on and off over the past several years. I factored in some of the major changes in the way that game was being marketed, such as the late change and introduction of one Tamriel; also some of the major nerfing implementations. However, at some point I realised that I wasn't a pogrammer and that I had no real idea of what the term 'game engine' actually encompassed. Suddenly, it became very clear that I wasn't even interested. I did find some naval fluff.

They should update it, and remove animation cancelling while at it.

This is resurrecting an old thread but I think it’s a discussion worth having.

Especially when thinking about the future. I for one would like underwater swimming to make a come back for a Black Marsh chapter to enhance exploration.

I didn't even know there was such limitations! :o I always thought that water/underwater and flying content is just a matter of time! :(

GW2 has way better cloth physics and that game is way older than ESO, you would think since ESO is the most recent it would do a better job but its far worse than any MMO I have ever played.

No MMO has such bad base game. Loadscreens, bad combat, bugs, game is in constant maintenance , physics and the list goes on and on, sure most MMOS do have these issues but they are incredible subtle at best nothing that sticks out as much as ESO. I really don't know if any of the devs actually play any MMOs or even play their own game.

    What a joke. :#

The game engine was already outdated BEFORE they began work on ESO... and unfortunately, they cannot just 'update' a game engine... the entire game has to be re-written to work on a new or updated engine. You saw this when the next DAI game was first being created... they ended up deciding to go to a different engine... and had to start all over again; it's not as simple as porting a game to another engine.

TL;DR - Absolutely, without a doubt. If I remember right, ZoS has even acknowledged that the engine is a limiting factor and needs an update. Will they actually do it is the question we should be asking.

Top-end hardware cannot even max out settings without big frame rate drops even on graphically light areas, that alone says something. Let's not even talk about this area in trials and other content. Between the engine and server performance limitations the game feels very sluggish. Maybe if started with an API update such as Vulkan and/or DX12 PLUS optimizations such as proper multi-core it could help greatly client-side. Think about how much performance increased to WoW after they did the same thing to their old engine. Wouldn't hurt, that's for sure.

Very few games if any will max out high-end hardware in a PC. Most consoles games don't max out the consoles capabilities.

Every engine is limiting. There is always something another engine can do or can do better. That is life.

    Greetings,

We have gone ahead and closed this thread down since it is rather old. Please keep in mind that sometimes it is better to create a new topic, instead of replying in one that was posted a while ago.

    Thanks for your understanding.
