Xbox controller tips

For PC players that switched to gamepad... How long did it take you to get used to the new interface? I'm finding animation canceling/weaving way harder and keeping a rotation is not going well.

I don't find it difficult at all to do a rotation but I suppose it might be different if I was used to mouse and keyboard.

One tip I can give if you have the Elite controller is to map the bar swap button to one of the back paddles. Other than that all I can say is go to town on a dummy and practice! You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Personally, I play with the Elite Controller. With the paddles in the back, I mapped it out so the top paddle is my left D-Pad. That way my thumbs never leave the buttons/stick, and I use my middle finger to switch bars. It didn't take me too long to get rotation/button placement down.

Yep I got the bar swap mapped to the back. I guess I'm getting faster than when I first got it a couple weeks ago (I still mostly play keyboard/mouse).

I like the controller cuz I can can play whether I'm laying down/standing up whatever, but wow everytime I switch back to keyboard/mouse its like someone turned easy god mode on.

I've used gamepad on PC for over 2 years. The gamepad UI is clunky as hell and will take some getting used to. And animation cancelling with gamepad isn't as smooth as kb&m but it can still be done when it wants to work properly.

If you feel like the gamepad camera is "too slow" or not sensitive enough, then I suggest increasing your gamepad camera sensitivity by opening the UserSettings file and then cranking it up higher than what the in-game setting/slider allows.

Look in this file (the location could be different):
    "...\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\UserSettings.txt"

Find these variables and edit the values in quotes:
    SET GamepadSensitivityFirstPerson.2 "1.50000000"
    SET GamepadSensitivityThirdPerson.2 "1.50000000"

I also suggest to use a keybind for toggling gamepad mode because there are times you may want to quickly swap to kb&m, like if an addon doesn't support gamepad UI.

@N00BxV1 thanks those are some great pointers!! I've noticed there's at least one addon out there that's supposed to make gamepads work better... I'm not sure exactly what it does though. Do you use any add-ons to improve gamepad experience?

Sorry, I don't use any addons that are specifically for gamepad UI. I just use the basics like minimap, skyshards, lorebooks, destinations, harvest map, lazy writ crafter, alphagear, craftstore, potion maker, etc. because they work in either mode (although some still require kb&m input).

    Same :)

I avoid game pad add-ons or preset configurations like the plague, BTW. They almost always screw stuff up. I only changed the mapping of potion and weapon swap.

I haven't played KM much so IDK how things work there, but with the controller it is super important to not mash your LA button (right trigger, I think?). When you weave, hit it once and then remove your finger entirely. Things go sideways for me if I don't do this. Otherwise... Muscle memory. It's all I really know so it feels very natural to me, so just keep practicing! People are surprised to hear that I use a controller when they see my parses/DPS. I think that the major disadvantage associated with controller play is almost entirely due to the lack of add-ons for console players and a lot less to do with playing with a controller than people realize. So on PC you should be fine, best of both worlds IMO.

Agreed, I’ve considered remapping my LA to a back paddle for this very reason tbh - might try that tonight

On Xbox i switch bar swap and crouch. Pushing in the right thumb is way easier / smoother than left on the D pad. Know alot of guys that do it.

I use a controller as well, lots of great tips in here I’ll try out.

One thing I did was remap using an ultimate and synergy to the right and down d-pad. I found mapping the ultimate and synergy to the d-pad make them fire more consistently.
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

I prefer my games on the PC & with a controller.. So here I am. Anyways I've been using an XB1 controller and things have been pretty decent. I hadn't even considered getting an Elite controller for the back buttons until I came across this thread. I'll have one arriving Tuesday lol. So I definitely will map weapon swap to a back button.

So two things I've noticed are not fully consistent are Y+B Synergy activations & RB+LB Ultimate Activations. It could be the specific controller I'm using (XBox PC controller that came w/ my Rift). I tried using another barely-used XB1 controller but the RBumper is finicky. Is it possible to map individual back buttons to each of these? I doubt it, but that would be awesome.

Even if I can't, I'm lookin forward to having back button weapon swap!

Once mobility is back there was no problem with skills. The only funny is block-jump :D

You can map pretty much anything to whatever. The controller even starts with some weird ass presets lol. But what I like is that you can make multiple presets for different games(and name them). Then all you do is go to the list and set whatever preset you want in spot 1/2. I always keep my first preset normal with no back paddles active, and the second is my gaming one.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned, it’s a LOT easier to light attack weave if you remap the light attack from the trigger to the x button.

Trigger’s weird for light attacking because it has to be pressed and released to fire. My dps went up significantly after I remapped it and got used to it.

Maybe a dumb question, but how do you create a remap? I've got the elite and can remap the back paddles using the controller's software settings, but ESO has 3 built in presets for the regular buttons and I have tried but not figured out how to change them.

Hubby and I use the Xbox Elite on PC but we don't use the Gamepad option, we use REWASD program.

    https://www.rewasd.com/

It's great! You can map almost every key and mouse button to the controller and it works great. We spent the first 3 years playing ESO with mouse and keyboard but since switching to the Elite we would never go back.

Here is a pic of my setup (Note the big center button on top is my Ultimate, I switched main keybind in game to the 7) I also added rumble on some of the actions and have the push-to-talk for some Discord servers on the controller as well, makes it easier to fight and talk at the same time. I play on a gaming laptop sitting back in a recliner and with the Elite controller I hardly ever need to touch the keyboard.

The REWASD website also has some saved configurations for ESO from other players, including the two that hubby and I use.
