Does all classes gameplay feel as generic as necro's? (New Player)

dambros
dambros
I started playing ESO with the Elsweyr release and chose to play a stam necro. After getting mine to 160 I realised most of the time what I am doing is using either 2H, DW or S&S skills, specially in pvp. This felt awkard because aside from the ultimates here and there, what I am doing could be done by literally any other class with maybe better results:

CC: 2H or S&S
Gap Closer: 2H or S&S
Burst: Ult or 2H
Sustained dmg: No idea, I feel mostly come from LA/HA
Healing: Vigor

Im currently thinking of starting a new characther and would like some input on which class wouldn't just fall under the same "problem". I was initially considering a warden, but whatever works...

Of course since I am new to the game, it's possible I am simply playing wrong and shouldn't be using weapon skills most of the time.

PvP wise, only stamina class with solid variety of types of builds possible is Stamina NB, mainly due to them having two usable class spammables for PvP(while most classes have none), tons of utility. Stamina Templar is another option too but they are weaker in comparison with lesser variety. Rest stamina classes are all very generic and though strong, lacks variety.

Magicka wise, things are much better in terms of variety. Especially Magicka NB and Magicka Templar can be built in variety of ways and still be successful.

Most Stam builds rely on their weapon skills, because ESO was originally designed for everyone to play magicka. Stam Necro and Stam Warden are the best in terms of actually having a variety of Stam class skills.

That being said, its in the eye of the beholder. I love my Stam Sorc, who uses very few class skills, because the synergy between crit surge, Hurricane, and the regular stam AOEs turns me into an AOE monster in mob-heavy content. My Stam Warden is a beast in PVP thanks to the burst of Sub Assault and the defensive/sustain synergy of the other Warden skills.

If you want more distinct playstyles that don't rely on weapons as heavily, I'd recommend trying some of the base game magicka builds like MagSorc (pet build or lightning build) or MagDK (melee DOTs + fire). You'll still be using destro staff with those builds, but you'll have more variety for class skills.

I think you touched on the subject that bothered me the most, the spammable. Necro has the skull one, but in pvp I havent seen anyone using it.

Can I assume if I have access to more spammable the class will be less generic/dependable on weapon skills?

It is funny though you mentioned NB, this is the one class I never considered since I dislike the hole “sneak around” gameplay. Or do nb have more direct gameplay options?

This is someone accurate. Zos did not have any stam morphs of class skills and some classes do not have any real direct damage skills that would work well morph.

However, Zos also gave stamina more weapons to choose from and a solid PvE build will always have bow with either DW or 2H. For PvP it can be a little different for obvious reasons.

But for generic, as a new player who I assume has not played anything else it seems a little odd you are calling your first character generic. it would seem more likely that you have not picked up on the playstyle of this game or it is not fitting with your interests. Often the case when a new player is complaining so early.

If you're a new player who has only played one class, how would you know what "generic" is?

Your other problem is that you decided to PvP, some stains can't be washed away.

Tbh mu complaints come from previous played MMO where I could actually feel like I was in fact playing the chosen class. Here, at least with my necro, I feel like I am playing a generic warrior with class skills I use 20% of the time (mostly due to regen factor). Again, I am not saying what I am doing is right, but it does feel like the most optimal

Sadly, yes. Class "freedom" means that basically you HAVE to play the same as everyone else or be useless in PVE. This is something you wont even realize until you get into the end game.

In PVP it is better, but the general like you have noticed, the variation of play-styles do fall into a limited number of categories in terms of how they actually feel to play.
    EU: Magden, Magknight, Stamsorc(*2), Magsorc
    NA: Magplar, Magden, PotatoBlade

You have AoE skill, high damage burst skill, spamable skill. Difference between then mostly in visual animation. So Endless Hail and Blazing Spear (for example) are kinda same things with just a different visual/sound.

Not knowing what MMORPG you came from but understanding that most MMORPGs limit what a class can do. Weapon limitations, skill limitations, the works. WoW is a great example of this antiquated design.

So not knowing what generic MMORPG you were playing it seems my comments were correct. You have not adjusted to the design of this game or it's style does not fit your liking.

This is an issue with all Stam builds tbh, which is why I much prefer magicka. Stam pretty much always has the same core set of abilities regardless of class: Endless hail, Poison injection, Rending slashes, Caltrops, Rearming trap, Resolving vigor, Dawnbreaker... then fill in the slots you have left with whatever is best in your class - making all stam dps builds feel rather same-y.

Magicka builds are much more varied from class to class, sharing less than half the number of skills leaving far more slots available for class abilities.

That’s just because you’re playing Stam. All stam builds use the same basic stam skills and have kinda similar rotations. Magcro on the other hand is one of the most dynamic rotations in the game along with magden.

It really depends on what you're planning to do as a player.

I have hybrid chars that are fine and do fine PvE wise and use class abilities. I have a 2hnd wielding pyromancer DK bruiser, a hybrid NB assassin, etc.

PvE it's completely doable and once you hit 50 +160 CP you can easily get gear to make hybrids viable IMO to do the content.

Vets and Trials will depend on who you're running with. My DK operates as a buffer and frees up the healers/tanks of that role and still does some damage. I know it might astound people to stop thinking in silos but... yep.

FYI, the game was originally designed so you used both pools.

Given all comments regarding this being an issue common to stam, I gess I eill look towards magicka next.

It is good to see I was not going crazy and others share the feeling I got, even though this is a first character. You know, I never thought “I doubt class X could do this as well as Im doing”.

I wish each class interacted with the pve world differently.

Rather than explain in an essay, an example could be that one class aggros certain enemy types and is neutral to others. One class gets access to inner sanctum guild stuff related to that classes's discipline.

So that characters don't all feel the same outside of combat. Because I have 9 characters and they all feel exactly the same when not in combat. I got my brand new necromancer character to level 21 and needed a break from the game because it feels so 'been there done that' for every single thing I do.

I wonder why you seem to be purposely vague about what MMORPG you played before this one. It seems as though I am correct with my previous responses or you just want to argue for the sake of arguing.

Not every game is for everyone. I know people who were challenged to adjust to this game and went back to games like WoW, etc. They liked combat builds that were on rails.

My reason I didnt name any specfic game was to avoid maybe triggering people who dislikes other mmos, but I was referencing mostly WoW and FF14. Both games felt classes were more different.

I think the “issue” here is the fact everyone has access to everything, thus it is easier for things to feel similar.

Nothing triggered but I did explain in post #10 that most MMORPGs do limit what you can do with a class. You have only one weapon you can use, maybe a couple build choices but from there you have one rotation or priority list and if you get it wrong you are weak sauce.

Both of the game you mentioned are in that vein. But I probably also said earlier that not every game is for everyone. Many players who enjoy playing ESO cannot stand the designs of both of those games you used to play. It is just life and it is great that we have different games to choose from.

I hope you either come to find something you enjoy about ESO or find a new game to explore.

Class and build variety in ESO is non-existent.
Stamina have basically one build for PVE.
There is some place for creativity in pvp thought. Duels , small scale , zerging , 1vX , etc
