DPS magplar without a staff?

So i started to play 2 weeks ago and i am now creating a Magplar (just level 11).

Now, my questions are:
Is it good to make a Magplar with 2H or sword and board (prefer SnB)?
Can i make it from the beginning and how? If so, wich armor and skills could i best use?

I know that staff heavy attack's give's you magicka etc... but i really like the combination of melee weapons 's with magick skill's (especially templar skills). It wouldn't bother me if i use a staff as my second weapon, i just don't like it as a main weapon. it will mostly be for solo play. if it's possible to give a simple beginners answer would be nice because i don't understand armor and weapon name's and i like to figure that out for myself (i do understand skill names). I just need a good guidance! thanks in advance!

You can always use spell symmetry to regain magika at the expense of health. But really solo content can be completed extremely easily.

that is great to hear! but how can i manage my magicka then? could you maybe just give an example for my Skills on both bars? and how i should play my character? (balance between weapon attack and skills, magick regen, put al my points in magicka?)

Look into having someone craft you a set of "Seducer" armor. It is a cheap and easy set to craft. The set gives you extra magicka regen and reduces cost of all your magicka skills. That should make up for losing out on magicka restored by staff heavy attacks. You can also look into food/drink that increases your magicka regen. The kind that just increases your magicka regen can be randomly found for free in the "kegs" that you see throughout the game world. Just be careful that you are taking it from kegs in caves and bandit camps and stuff. The guards will not like it if you take it from kegs in town.

Note that food and drink do not stack. So if you drink something that increases magicka regen and then eat something that increases max health, the max health will wipe out the extra magicka regen. If you want to increase multiple stats, you need to get it all from one item of food/drink. There is more expensive food/drink that can increase multiple stats (like max health and max magicka and magicka regen) but you likely do not need it.

Most players try to get by with as little magicka regen as possible because they want to focus on damage stats. But if you are just doing quests and exploring zones, you do not need anywhere even remotely near the type of damage that is required for endgame dungeons and trials and stuff. You will have enough damage to kill solo story bosses and enemies with swords. But if you are struggling with running out of magicka, look for stuff to increase magicka recovery or reduce cost of skills.

So my main is a magplar. When i'm soloing PVE I run GS on front bar and Destro on back bar. Mainly because I like the look of GS on my character and when using Jabs it makes me feel like i'm able to just use my GS at great speed. The only benefit for GS is the increase in damage. You could also do the same thing with SB but even less damage output but more defense.

Front Bar: Toppling charge, puncturing sweeps, Structure Entropy, Reflective light, and radiant destruction
Back Bar: Channeled Focus, Extended Ritual or solar barrage (depending on what im fighting), elemental wall, and breath of life.

But once I go into vet trials and dungeons all my gear is changed and I run dual destro staff and avg about 48k dps max i hit was 53k on practice target. I mention this because it is easily doable to play solo PVE how you want bc most world events can be soloed. As well as if you want to do end game its easy enough to carry those sets with you and switch out skills to handle the situation.

Really the only big change is when you go to PVP which requires a distribution of you champion points because your CP will be way different to get the best benefits for PVP vs PVE. In this case I have separate tunes just for PVP.

    Happy gaming!

If you're just planning on playing solo, a melee Magplar is absolutely doable. I played a DW Magplar (inferno backbar) for a bit in PvP, and it was super fun. Honestly, unless you're min/maxing for end game PvE content, you can do whatever you like with your character. It'll all work on some level, and if you're playing solo, the only person you're competing with is you, so there's no real need to go with the "best" stuff out there or use the best builds.

Generally (at least in this game), you'll want to pile into all mag if you're going to use mag based skills, since much of your dmg is based on your mag pool. If you're going to use a non-staff set up as your main gear choice, I'd advise putting your important attacks on your front bar (Puncturing Sweeps, Solar Barrage, Blazing Spears, Reflective Light, Honor the Dead, etc), and your support skills on the back (Ritual of Retribution, Channeled Focus, etc) and using a staff with a channel on it like either the lightning (preferred) or a resto (gives the best mag return) on your back bar so you can heavy attack if you find yourself needing resources.

If you're having trouble with sustain, try to be careful about which skills you're using and when. It's super easy to get caught up in spamming a costly but effective skill, but really look at your skills and think about how you can layer them instead to put out the max amount of dmg while using the least amount of mag. Try throwing down shards, activate your solar barrage, then hit the npc with puncturing sweeps. That's usually enough to take down almost anything you will encounter, and the sweeps also serves as a heal.

I always strongly advise new players to really play around with and get to know every skill you have available to use and try not to get in the rut of only using one or two skills. Magplars have a really fun toolkit.

I also started my MagPlar as a SnB toon as I liked the look of the character. I stacked it as magica as all of my skills that I was using was magica based.

What I found was that I really wasnt using the SnB skills and that the AoE kit that the Templar has is what I was using.
After getting to level 50 and CP160, I finally gave up the SnB Yesterday and I now have a Staff that I am using/leveling up.

IMO the weapon really doesnt matter that much for solo PVE as I am rarely needing to use it. Most trash mobs melt with my opening AOE.
