Are old set viable?

Are old set not viable? I’m casual so prefer pvp rather than getting new set all the time and have a necro/shackle/warmaiden magical warden. Is this still ok or not good enough anymore?

I think it's fine, that combo at least. IMO sets are only part of the build, the other is enchantments, potions and just your playstyle.

Those are great sets for a magden, stats>proc for dmg sets imo. I mix-up monster sets at times for raw stats also.

Yeah, it’s hard to say any armor is BIS for PVP. As long as you aren’t doing something ridiculous, which it appears you are not, you can PVP in old gear no problem.

That's what's good about PvP in ESO there is no BIS, it all depends on how you build your toon and what weapons you use.

    Be safe (on the Battlefield)

For pvp at least I’ve found old sets are the best sets. Those are solid sets, personally prefer necro, shackle and pirate skeleton or blood spawn.

Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

Okay thanks. I do need to get some more hp tho. Only 12k unbuffed

What actually makes an old built bad/outdated? Patch, nerfs or just better options?

    Pretty much.

If you were abusing something that was overperforming, a patch could make that much less appealing. For example: The old endgame Trainee builds which relied on the set's absurd stats at 160. Or proc sets, which have been heavily nerfed in the last few years.

In some cases, yes, better options are a valid reason to suggest changing up your build. New sets like False God or Symphony of Blades can be very attractive to players. They don't outright invalidate the old sets, but they can be more appealing to current builds.

That said, most of the time, builds in ESO don't really get outdated as new content comes along. You might have options that will work better for you, but the overall power level from gear is somewhat flat (with a few outliers.)

Also Worth Remembering: The community tends to be little drama queens about nerfs. Just because something's been nerfed, it's still (usually) functional. There are some rare exceptions, like the Bosmer stealth passive being outright removed, but overall, nerfs don't make a build bad, though they may bring it down a notch.

In general usually when something becomes hands down the best, it’s because it’s glitchy or ill conceived when it launches. Viper a few years ago was one that comes to mind. When this happens it’s only a matter of time before the nerf hammer hits it hard.

As long as you follow a basic plan of using magic sets for magic characters, stamina for stamina characters and health for health characters you’ll be on the right track.

Also, sometimes there will be a trial or dungeon set that people will say you NEED to have. That is almost always misinformation because many people don’t actually leave Cyrodiil, let alone for a long enough time to farm a perfect set.

Another example is if a set comes out that is simply a better version of an old set. Crafty Aflik (new set) is essentially exactly the same as Necropotence but doesn’t require a pet.

Many end game PVPers still use Julianos or Hundings because they are pretty good and can be easily crafted into any weight of armor to fit build holes. Neither of those sets would be called BIS but both still work totally fine for 99.9% of players. I got 250k AP yesterday in Julianos for example.

As for the health thing about 25K should be your minimum. Personally I’m at 23.9K but I’m a lunatic. You probably don’t want to copy my style. Keep in mind that PVP gives you 5K extra health. The unbuffed part is irrelevant because stepping foot in Cyrodiil without food is suicide for even the most hardcore players. I had mine drop yesterday and was dead in a blink. Don’t be me. :)

So 12k + 10k in food and buffs would put you around 22k. Maybe mix in a glyph or move some CP around. Oil can hit you for 25k by itself so do what you can to squeak out a few thousand more health. Or, and I’ve done this before, equip an insane amount of health and crit resist and then every day strip a bit of it away until you find a level where you are comfortable. Maybe you need 40k and 3000 crit resist, but maybe you only need 23.9 and about 1400 like me. That part is all trial and error as well as personal preference.

    Good luck! Hope this helps!

FYI a lot of older sets still work great. I think understanding how other classes play in combination with your understanding of your class and ability will do far more than sets.
