I prefere to have it on one, my main. So you don't have to switch chars when you need something and it's cheaper when it comes to buying/farming different armor styles. :)

You can use multiple characters for researches to save on bank space, but ultimately you want a single character that knows everything. If you're just starting out you can have Char 1 research Jewelry, Blacksmith Weapons, Staves, and Clothing while Char 2 research Blacksmith Armor, Leather, and Bow & Shield. Once your main guy runs out of stuff to research, the second character can craft what they know to research on your main. This way your bank/mules aren't being flooded by items waiting to be researched.

I do all on my main. Makes it easier with all the motifs etc. You need some skillpoints but there's more than enough to make your crafter able to fight as well.

It is easier to manage on one character and preferably main. I have enough skill points in other passive even though I almost max all crafting skill including keen eye and hireling. But then again i found more than 420 skyshards and completed most quest.

    I split mine between 2

My main is for crafting gear as it was the char I ended up learning the motifs on
and my 2nd char became my chef/enchanter etc

I wouldn't want to create a char just for crafting as I'm not about to spend months learning the styles again

Your main adventuring character can get a lot of skill points so it's handy to have it all on that character, but in the early game it's tougher because you need a lot of points for various skills like research.
The main thing is that research, motif knowledge, and recipe knowledge can be hard to duplicate onto another character later if you have a separate crafter toon.

Only craft i prefer to have on all characters is alchemy, so that i can restock on potions while in cyrodiil without having to relog (and possibly lose my spot if population is locked). Other than that, main(well, first) char does all crafting.

One of the biggest things I did did to advance research crafting faster than a lot of the people I know was putting points into researching each craft faster and researching multiple items at a time in a craft.

Before Jewelry was introduced (making it 7 crafts) I broke it down like this:
    I researched BS on one.
Cloth and wood on a second.
Alchemy and provisioning on a third.
It just made it simpler to remember and coordinate who knew what when the next research came due.

That way no single 'toon had to produce as many points put into fighting skills as you would if one crafter did it all from the start.
Stronger fighters allow you to take your 'toons to harder to reach skyshard locations more easily to earn more points to spend.

While you're power-learning your chosen crafts on each 'toon you're still learning alternate crafts on those same 'toons at a slower rate on the alternate 'toons anyway.
Once you finish up your crafting on your main crafters you can respec the alts to learn the other crafts quicker.

The point being that you have 9 traits learned on your chosen 3 sooner, so you can make anything sooner on your account, and the other 'toons can catch up as time goes by.
Then your 'toons can make anything for research that any of your other 'toons need to learn without relying on friends or guild to make stuff for you to research.

It helps if you coordinate the ending times for research on a 'toon as best you can so you know basically much of your research turns over on a 'toon at 'the same time'

Learning all your motifs on one 'toon first makes accounting easier, and you theoretically have access to more master writs from writ rewards on your one 'toon, sooner, too, including knowing more recipes on a 'toon.
My one 'toon that I concentrated motifs on knows every motif but the several of the newer ones, and several of my other 'toons know many of them as well from doubles/etc.

For disclosure, I have 12 'toons doing all 7 writs every day.
They've all been done with research for months now, and all the research points were re-allocated long ago.
It takes about an hour, and brings in close to 60K gold every day adding in items with ornate characteristics, and the crap potions I get that I sell to vendors .
I generally give stuff with inspiration to newbs to get them started.

It's early on my first cup of coffee, so I hope I didn't botch the messy explanation too badly.

If you do the quests, dungeons and collect sky shards on main you can have him as primary crafter.
Its more than enough skill points to be DD + Heal + PvP, maxed out crafting in all skills and still have 40 skill points left over.

I have a separate crafter. I tried making my first character an all in one, but in the early goings my skill points were spread thin and I was anxious to get my combat skills going, so I made a character who I could just put all their points into crafting and not have to divy them up.

Had my first already been leveled some it wouldn't have been an issue, but I wanted to get started crafting right away so I found this to be easiest. Now that my crafter is close to maxing her crafts I've been slowly giving her some combat abilities, she's my one character who's build I don't take very seriously at all, I just sort of try seeing what I can get away with on her, in a minimalist/hybrid kind of way, which actually makes her a lot of fun to play on.

My other characters are all leveling provisioning and alchemy, and there's a couple who I'll bother with doing research on, including that first character, so maybe one day he'll still be that all in one.

IMO you might as well level crafting on all your alts at least passively. I do traits on everyone, and I get more 'Intricate' gear than I can auction off (and vendoring seems a waste), so I just cycle through who's turn it is to decon everything. It takes a while to get them anywhere near 'usable' crafters, but then I can do max level writs on them and it's free money. Better reward boxes, chances for gold mats and other stuff, chances for Mastercraft Writs, plus the gold and free repair kits/soul gems is always a bonus. I can generate a couple 100k weekly just from the writs, they're not to be underestimated as a money maker.

BUT, you should absolutely designate someone as your main crafter, regardless if it's your 'main main' or not, and don't change it. Because spreading everything out is tedious for whenever you wanna craft stuff and have to switch around, farming duplicate motifs is tedious, farming furniture plans is tedious (especially the rare ones like CWC or Murkmire), and if you don't want to farm then it gets expensive fast.

I thought I wanted a 'main' and a 'crafting main' a while back, but decided to switch my main to my crafter when JC came out because I didn't want to level it twice. It was a mistake I over committed to so... now I have two master crafters with tons of furniture and motifs each. I'm determined to finish all the crafting achievements on BOTH of them since I already started and that's just how I am but I wouldn't recommend it. And if you need a deterrent, imagine farming full Bouyant Armigers motifs twice. It makes me glad that stupid island gets blown to bits.

You should learn motifs only on one character imo

Especially when rare, event and store exclusive motifs drop. That way when a master writ comes you aren’t clicking through characters trying to find the one who knows Elder Argonian Shield because your main only learned the bracers or something like that.

I have never created a character just for crafting. I did level up two characters to play. One did all the armor and weapons so it did all the research. The other did all the soft crafts such as food and enchanting. Now that both have near 400 SP they and the next two characters I rolled have all the crafting. Though I only do motifs on the first one that did armor and weapons.

You can do all crafting on your main. I'd echo that recommendation to do all crafting one a single character, rather than spread it out. Preferably, if you're going to have more than one character crafting, designate a "pecking order" where the primary gets all the motifs, recipes, plans, etc. and then only duplicates get passed down. I don't see any benefit for more than one character making furnishings, but master writs come in faster if you have more character qualifying for them. That makes it worth learning the duplicates on the second, third ... crafters. Knowing complete motifs counts more for that, so having a fixed order for your hand-me-downs maximises that.

Skill points are available easily enough, so there's no reason for designating a character as "crafting-only". All my characters craft, and my primary crafter is also the crew's tank.

As most above I have everything maxed on one main toon, but also have many professions capped on others too, but I would definitely concentrate on getting everything on one first.

It just makes sence to have everything in one place, it's so much easier. I always log that "main" character off in a main town too near to bank, guild traders and crafting stations, again it just makes life so much easier if you need anything on any character.

My primary crafter is a long term ex-main. I respecced her skill points when I decided to have a different main character, and she now concentrates entirely on crafting.

The current main character also levels and researches crafting, but at a slower speed, and not at the expense of allocating skill points that are needed for adventuring.

Well I do all my crafting on the first character I created in ESO, but he is not my main. He has all the motif’s and a Grand Master crafter. However, I have also leveled all my other characters in most every crafting skill mainly to keep a steady supply of mats from doing the writs. I have enough mats to never have to worry about making or improving any gear up to gold level, plus a steady income in gold from selling mats. So improving the crafting skills for all your characters is certainly worthwhile.
