So i left the game for a while, and once i come back i see new quest markers. There's the typical skyrim-style arrow ones, but also oval shaped ones now. What's the difference and what do they mean?

Also, how do you find the next quest needed for your faction's storyline? I finished the main quest on four or five characters now but i've only done a faction storyline once and didnt finish it, and have no idea where to start. I also want to get Cadwell's Silver and Gold but have no idea how to keep track of the story questlines.

Those special arrows are used to mark main quest for the zones story, don't remember off the top of my head where you can track the information as to where you left off but if you go to the journal there is a zone guide that can point you on your way for that area. I haven't done zone questing much lately but i'm pretty sure if you aren't up to that zone yet you'll get a quest pointing you back to where you need to be.

Thank you! Thats exactly what i needed. I just wish they had a way to track and begin the next story quest from your journal, kind like how you can start the main story for each expansion from your journal.

It's a part of the new Zone Guide UI update that tracks your progress (you may have noticed Skyshard, Quest, World Boss, etc trackers on the left when you open your map).

To start the main quest, Open Zone Guide and click 'Start Zone Story'. The old inverse triangle quest marker is for regular quests (blue is repeatable quests), and the new diamond shaped ones are for the main storyline in the zone, so you should focus on those. Happy adventuring!

For the faction stories, if you want to do them in the original order (you don't have to, you can start in any zone) you should head over to the starting zones and work your way through the main quests there with the help of the Zone Guide tracking your progress. For DC the order is Stros M'kai, Betnikh, Daggerfall, Stormhaven, Rivenspire, Alikr Desert, Bangkorai; for AD it's Khenarthi's Roost, Auridon, Grahtwood, Greenshade, Malabal Tor, Reaper's March; for EP it's Bleakrock Isle, Bal Foyen, Stonefalls, Deshaan, Shadowfen, Eastmarch, Rift.

These diamond icons mark storyline quests, as opposed to side quests with the old markers, and daily/repeatable quests with blue markers. Not just the main quest line for a zone though, but guild quests, the Main Quests, and intro quests to DLC zones. This can get confusing for a system that was supposed to make things more straightforward, but you also have a zone guide on the map screen to help you keep track.
