Having some issues with keybinds using controller

So, I use a PS3 controller on my PC, and the game thinks it's an XBox controller (which I really don't care about, and not what this post is about). But I've been trying to change some of the keybinds because of the PS3 controller layout.

On an XBox controller the Block and Attack are Left and Right trigger, which are the same as L2 and R2 for PS3. But It feels awkward using those as my main attack/block buttons, so I want to switch them to L1/R1 (or Left and Right Button/Bumper for XBox). Now, changing those are fine, and I just switch the two abilities that were on L1/R1 to L2/R2. But when I try to change the Interrupt action (originally set as "Hold LT + RT") to "Hold LB + RB", it doesn't work. It just changes it to LB + RB which is set as my Ultimate. For some reason it allows me to set something as "Hold LT + RT", but not "Hold LB + RB". I press and hold LB (or L1 on my controller) and it shows up on screen as "Hold LB" as the keybind, but as soon as I press RB (R1) it just changes the bind to LB + RB even though I'm still holding down the LB.

I tried to do something similar a few months ago without success. The conclusion unfortunately seems to be that the game’s gamepad keybindings are not capable of registering a “hold one button and press another” kind of control, even though the developers have somehow put some of those in as defaults.

The gamepad mode is rather rudimentary in many ways compared to the keyboard equivalent.

A potential workaround I can suggest is trying to set up custom controller keybindings on Steam for use with the ESO native keyboard mode. (You can run ESO through Steam and benefit from its custom keybinds even if you didn’t buy ESO through Steam.) There are custom presets for ESO shared by other users for you to try, but YMMV with how comfortable they feel. From my own experience, Steam’s controls are much more customizable and can handle the “hold this and press that” input just fine, but running Steam to use these custom controls negatively impacted performance enough for me to revert to the native gamepad mode. (I don’t have the most powerful CPU out there.)

I share your pain. I love using a controller on my computer. And I am pretty impressed that the PS4 controller actually works at all with my system.

And I really like the console interface.

The sad reality (which I’m sure console players will eyeroll at) is that there just aren’t enough buttons/combos to cope with the options available.

It’s super annoying that while the keybinder will recognise L2 + circle, the game itself won’t.

I can’t suggest any practical solution though. Sadly I imagine resolving this has a (justifiably) low priority at ZOS.

I didn't even think to use Steam for that. I tried it out tonight, and it works great for me! Thanks for the tip!

I share your frustration, I use controller, and I don't like that interrupt combo (neither the ultimate) as sometimes it registers just as block and takes a few tries to work. Also, I'm not sure, but I heard since the combo involves block, there is no stam regen during the bash, but not sure if that's the actual case or not. I just got used to it, but there just aren't enough buttons to remap all the things.

Are you using Steam or regular ESO? One of the benefits of using with Steam and Big Picture mode, is you can customize your controller via Steam to change functionality of your gamepad/controller for each game. While normally gamepad mode on the Triggers are hard coded to be your Attack and Block keys, you can get around that by changing it in Steam such instead of the Triggers, it could be the Shoulder Buttons that do the Trigger command or the Select/Start button, or pressing down the Joysticks to register as the Left and Right Trigger buttons.

Search the forums for Better DS3. I have a thread from when the game was released showing how to set up that program and use a PS3 Controller.
Far too many characters to list any more.

I don't have an answer, but I do have at least three or four actions mapped to button combos (L1 + Circle, etc). While configuring them I noticed that only some actions accept button combos as input, while for others only the first button pressed is accepted (or even neither, unless only one is pressed individually). I'm not sure if there's any rhyme or reason behind it all, but a different set of buttons might be worth trying. Best of luck.
