in-game mail: character specific mail vs account-wide mail

I have 9 characters. I get hireling mail delivered to them all but they can only be collected if I log in each character. Does anyone understand the reasoning behind this? If I sell an item via my trade guilds on a character..I can collect the money from sales on any of my characters so why does some mail behave like account-wide mail and other mail is character specific? It's such a pain to log in and out 9 characters and I can't imagine it's great for server performance, either. Wouldn't it be easier on everyone if all mail was just account-wide and you could collect it from any character you wanted?
