Trapping Souls

Ok about a week ago I figured out how to trap souls, charge my weapons, etc. But I was recently on a quest that was so intense that I almost completely drained my bow dry of it's enchantment. I assigned the soul trap skill to my bar and always cast that spell right before killing a lot of enemies in that quest....but after the quest when I went to recharge my bow, all my soul gems are empty, lol.

So what am I doing wrong? When I cast soul trap on something, do I gotta kill it ASAP or i don't get the soul or something?

If you use the soul spell, you need to kill something within the timer the tooltip is showing.
The best method to charge soul gems in the long term, is the last passive from the Soul Magic tree line.
You will kill a lot of stuff on your travels, and empty soul gems get charged relative fast.

What I do is going into a random normal 1 dungeon as my tank, and spam soul trap as my group mates are slaughtering everything. I usually get about 80 filled soul gems each dungeon, depending on the skill level of my group.

I literally just did again a few minutes ago.

    Nine seconds, I think.
If you watch, you can see the effect swirling on them.

I kill monsters within about two seconds of using soul trap spell, but I have never trapped one soul.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I did not have this problem in Skyrm.

If you cast your soul trap around half mob HP, it usually works. If you fight two, remember to recast for the second.

Of course, you need to have ample empty soul gems in your inventory... but those are for one buyable at the mages guild, and for another often found in treasure chests, so... should not be too much of an issue, right?

And yeah, as said, the best way is to get your Soul Magic up, then you have a small chance on -any- weapon kill to trap a soul. You don't even have to think about it, it just happens as you murderboat all the mobs in your path...

Then you will have a nice stack of filled soul gems you can use to recharge your weapon enchantments, or rez people in cyrodil (or yourself in other places if it comes to that)

the obvious question to ask is:

Are there any empty soul gems in your inventory?

if not - you cannot capture souls.
