Why would I take Inner Light over Bound Aegis? ;o

Puxo1105

I know that Inner Light is very popular, but it gives 2%+2% max magicka? When Bound Aegis gives 5%?
And if the reason is to get Major Crit buff, why not take Major Sorcery buff instead?, like power surge?

And how big dps diffrent is really 5% max magicka? Are there any way to test it out real good (on xbox one)?

    eagis 8%
    inner 7% (5% + 2% actually)
    shooting star 2%
    =
    17%

if you using Necro + new Crafty Alfiq sets, then you can end by having 66k magicka. With active War Horn 70k+.

Inner light gives 5% if I’m not mistaken, when leveled. Appears you are talking about sorc. I use inner light and power surge most of time unless in good raid group then I drop surge and use spell power pots. Depending on your setup you can run aegis and inner light on your main bar and surge on buff/aoe bar. If you’re pet that’s best if non pet then the lil extra mag won’t be such a gain but the constant crit from inner light is really good. 95% of content you can use both inner light and surge and just use tri pots or trash pots. This can save a lot of gold also.

Edit: also from years of testing I find that slotting a passive ability such as inner light(that will increase your dps without using it) is better than trying to slot 5 attack abilities that lowers your dps. You should have one spammable skill. On sorc it’ll be heavy attack, prey, pet. On non pet it’ll be force pulse/crushing shock or elemental weapons while hitting in the frag when it procs. So you should have at least one slot to slot inner light or whatever else.

Inner light provides 7% extra magicka and 2% extra recovery. Major Prophecy
Bound Aegis provides 8% magicka, minor resolve, minor ward and 2% extra spell damage.

If you dont want to use potions of spell crit, Inner light is a better option.
If your build require some extra magicka recovery, inner light is better.

For pet sorc the difference is non existent, and you can always use both.

Oh right, just looked on the tooltip here.. Didnt take into account that it gains when it levels. My fault

Im working on my way to try out a dual pet sorc for fun, not min/max it :)
And not really sure what skills. All guides are diffrents :)
But alcasthq have crystal fragments in his build for dmg + minor crit buff that sounds awesome.

But I guess hes not using either inner light or power surge cuase he use pots?
But as you wrote, inner light is a good option if I dont want to use pot

If I would take inner light and keep crystal fragments, I would need to drop ward. Dont know if I wanna do it :open_mouth:
So next question would be, how big diffrent is it too have crystal fragments if anyone know?
Maybe better to just run ward instead of crystal fragments then

This is actually a pretty good question as the 2 skills are very much vs. each other.

As always it depends on if you are PVE or PVP ing. Also it depends on if you are building a Pet Sorc or Non-Pet Sorc.

Inner light gives 5% Max Magicka from fully leveled skill + 2% Max Magicka and 2% Magicka Regen from Mage's Guild line Magicka Controller passive and then on top 2191 (10%) Spell Crit.

Bound Aegis gives 8% Max Magicka on fully leveled skil + 2% Weapon and Spell Damage from Storm Calling Expert Mage Passive and then on top Minor Ward and Minor Resolve (1320 Spell and Physical Defense).

    So in the end its-

Inner light = 7% Max Mag, 2% Regen, and 10% Crit vs Bound Aegis = 8% Max Mag, 2% Spell Damage, 1320 phys/spell resist

So in PVE it is most common in ORGANIZED groups to run Spell Pots one of which has Max Mag/Regen, Major Sorcery, and 2191 (10%) Spell Crit. This can be kept up at all times and thus negates the need for any of these to come form elsewhere. As such you wouldn't want to use your aforementioned Major Sorc Buff skill (Power Surge) as you are wasting a skill slot and magicka running it, nor would Inner Light be optimal because you are already getting the 10% crit.

HOWEVER, in Pug's or non-organized group play where you don't know if you will have a REAL tank or healer or if the other DPS will pull their weight things drastically change depending on your build.

As I said Pet-Sorc vs Non-Pet comes into play.

Pet-Sorcs have a built in burst heal via Matriarch, Non-Pets have NO heals unless they slot Power Surge (The Major Sorc Buff skill) Pet-Sorcs have MUCH MUCH Fewer skill slots to work with VS Non-Pet which have more variety.

If in an UNORGANIZED group and NOT a Pet Sorc, then slotting Power Surge is almost always needed so you have some form of self heal and aren't fully dependent on your group for survival. This would also lend you to use the Spell Crit pots instead which now gives you Max Mag/Regen, Max Health/Regen, 2191 (10%) Spell Crit as the Major Sorc is now given through skill and not needed in your pot. This will give you a burst heal and higher health regen when drank now that the pot gives health and will still give you the crit.

In both cases Bound Aegis is the better skill.

But again, a NON-Pet build has more slots to use and on at least 1 bar (normally front) in organized group play you try to put BOTH skills. As Inner Light+Bound Aegis gives you 15% Max Magicka, 2% Magicka Regen, 2% Spell Damage, and 1320 phys/spell resist. You then run 2 ingredient spell pots giving you only Major Sorc and Max Mag/Regen.

In Unorganized non-pet build you again would want to slot Power Surge but still double bar front bar Inner + Bound and then run a simple Max Magicka Pot or 2 ingredient Max Magicka/Health pot.

In PVP builds are much more nuanced. You slot the skill which gives you what you are lacking the most. Spell Pots or Crit Pots are not used much in PVP because you need either all resources (Tri-Pots) or specific pots that have Immovable, or Invisibility etc. But in most cases you ALWAYS want to have health as part of the pot if you can manage which KILLS Spell Pots. Since everyone is running Impen armor, Crit Chance isn't as important since your crit damage is very much scaled down and sometimes fully negated by your opponents build. But more resistance is always a good thing leaning towards Bound Aegis. But again, having no-crit still isn't ideal, and thus running Inner-light can give your build an easy crit boost without needing the pots or actually building for Crit plus gives a sorc SOME type of skill to counter those Night Blades, though it is very very weak and very very costly....but it is something.

So in PVP I find it a closer call.

    In the End

PVE Pet-Sorc in Unorganized and Organized group builds would probably do better picking Bound Aegis as it gives 1% more Max Magicka, Higher Resistance for Shields, and more Raw Spell Damage. Also they have fewer skill slots and can't slot both skills and already have access to a burst heal meaning they never need to run Power Surge and thus can always run Spell pots with Crit in any situation.

PVE Non-Pet Sorcs would benefit from having BOTH Inner light and Bound Aegis on at least 1 bar in both Organized and Unorganized group play. However, in Unorganized group play they will need to likely run different Pots and Use Power Surge and thus, if needed to choose only 1 of the 2, Bound Aegis is the better option.

In PVP both Pet-Sorcs and Non-Pet Sorcs should run whichever skill actually helps their build and survivability more. Its not such a clean cut case and both have viable uses.

Crystal Frags is a needed skill on any NON-Pet sorc in any situation. The burst damage from the skill, when used right, can guarantee kills. Haunting Curse + Frags + Endless Fury and a light attack if timed correctly can all hit at the same time and create such a burst damage combo only true tanks can survive it. However, aligning the burst is the hard part and can be interrupted or dodged fairly easy let alone if you are up against opponents that can cleanse, thus removing both Haunting Curse and Endless Fury from the equation.

Also remember whenever you activate a Dark Magic Skill it gives you and your group Minor Prophecy or 5% Crit. Frags is normally the only skill used to grant this in a build....though PVP does allow one to actually use Dark Conversion to some extent which will also do it.

Pet-Sorcs aren't nearly as tied to the Frags skill and can go without it and the majority do go without it.
