You have to log into an character and out to character select.
    Because reasons
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Is this for real? I bought a slot because I didn't see any when I first logged in. ZOS nickel and diming at its best.

I don't expect free stuff. I'm used to paying for my stuff, so I assumed I had to pay for a slot, as I had none available in the character select screen. To learn that ZOS had offered one but put it behind a log in/log out procedure just makes me think they wanted to catch the odd distracted player such as me. It's not serious, I only play when I sub and have 20k+ crowns because I've never bought anything other than DLC and character slots. But it feels like a(nother) shady move by ZOS.

So because you didn't read the forums or properly research the content of the update you make ZoS out to be the bad guy? If you want to call them out on stuff, fine, but other people were aware of this so it seems the fault lies elsewhere. IMHO.

Do I have an obligation to read the forums? As shown by the thread linked by @ManwithBeard9 above, many people had the same issue and @ZOS_GinaBruno wasn't immediately sure of the reason, instead she said the extra slot "should just show up". Yes, I do feel it's a shady move. Feel free to disagree.

I didn't see anything in the patch notes about having to log on and off a character before seeing your new slot. I'd suggest it should have been in there.

Benefit of being on console - you pc players can nut all this rubbish out before we get it.

It's not the first time it's been required to log into a character and log back out to login screen for new stuff to show up.

Gotta love the Stockholm syndrome here. Yes, blame the player who's excited to make their first character with the new class for the new expansion. Because it would have been impossible for ZOS to simply add the free slot to the character select screen. People ARE impulsive. ZOS seems to rely on it for the few extra dollars. Anyway, as I said, I have plenty of crowns because I have little use for those funny money units. Just find these practices objectionable.

Uh, I think you're misusing the whole Stockholm syndrome comparison. No one here's being held captive by ZOS or anything. You can defend someone or thing without being labeled as a Stockholm victim.

Beyond that, what people are saying is instead of having a knee-jerk reaction and assuming you had to 'buy' the free slot, then blaming ZOS when that isn't the case, you really could have taken a few minutes to check the forums and make sure it wasn't something called a bug or glitch. Essentially people are saying you could have done a bit of research instead of jumping to conclusions, which to be fair, is it entirely unexpected of someone to double-check something before making a decision?

For the record it was like this on the PTS too, and ZOS didn't mention it in the patch notes. That leads me to believe it's not intended, as I don't think it was in the live patch notes either (though I haven't read the live notes yet). I highly doubt this is anything to do with ZOS trying to scam people out of money. Most peoples' first reaction, if told they'd receive something for free and they don't get it, isn't to buy what they were told they'd get for nothing. Generally people will do a bit of digging and searching before coming to any given conclusion. If this were some ploy on ZOS' part to get more money, it's a really really poor ploy.

Substitute white-knighting for the Stockholm syndrome thing if you will. I just get annoyed at the defence of questionable practices. To be clear, and this will be my last post here since there really is nothing more I have to add:

    - Players shouldn't be expected to check the forums for any reason unless they run into a problem they can't solve otherwise.
    - It shouldn't be hard to add a free slot to players' accounts on first login, so the log into a character and back out to character select is jumping through hoops.
    - I already had the crowns, and I will make more than one new character, so I will be using the free slot that eventually showed up. I have suffered nothing with this. I am questioning the practice itself, because it might cause someone without an existing crown balance to go out and buy a crown pack unnecessarily.

Okay see, here's the thing. The forums exist. Information exists. Checking for that information doesn't take more than a minute or two to scan the forums. You couldn't take a handful of minutes to actually make sure what was happening wasn't a bug or a glitch? And that's ZOS' fault? There is literally nothing to question, and like I mentioned already, I'm fairly certain this wasn't intended since I don't recall it being mentioned in the PTS patch notes and everyone had the problem with getting their free slots on the PTS. But fine, overlook that part because it interferes with what you want to believe as a 'shady practice'.

Saying people shouldn't be expected to use sources of information they have for problems is like saying someone shouldn't read the instruction manual for a new product they buy, unless they have a problem with the item they can't fix otherwise. Isn't taking a few minutes to go over a resource you know you have to make sure you CAN solve a problem yourself generally the suggested way of handling things?

Also I don't really see how logging in, then back out, to unlock the free slot is 'jumping through hoops'. A majority of people are going to be swapping characters in one day regularly, be it for crafting writs, mount training, getting hireling mail, and so on.

You remind me of some of my guild members who are always upset that they cannot participate in the guild runs because the they didn't know there's guild event or they come in the last minute and the group is full (especially when there is a sign up), yet they freely admit they never read chat/MOTD/Discord announcements...
Of course you don't have to read anything - but then don't come on the forum and complain that your Psijic powers don't really work IRL. That has nothing to do with any syndrome or knights or ZOS playing dirty (which they often do, but not this time), it's just a matter of common sense and reading comprehension.
TL;DR: L2R bc PEBCAK, get it? Also, first try to turn it off and on again - works 99% of times.

What Stockholm syndrome? I'm commenting on your silly reaction, not defending ZOS here. With a little patience you can achieve a lot more. And I'm saying that my first reaction after not getting the free slot wouldn't be "buy the slot". I'd rather ask what's wrong, starting with zone chat. Lot's of helpful people here. Then maybe forums. Maybe submit a ticket. Not buy the thing on impulse because I can't wait and must have the thing now. That impulsiveness is how you get screwed over and you have no one to blame but yourself. As for me I didn't even notice that I didn't get that slot. I'll probably won't be playing Elsweyr right away as I'm not in a hurry, there's a lot to do in that game. I'll wait out the initial crowds of people and wait for inevitable bugs to get fixed so I can have a better more immersive experience just a bit later. So basically, sure, communication on ZOS part could be clearer on some parts here and there but you as a consumer of anything shouldn't forget about buyer beware. And really, a few minutes of researching the issue is hardly a chore. As I said, patience is a virtue.

PS. As for the issue at hand, namely this:
I am questioning the practice itself, because it might cause someone without an existing crown balance to go out and buy a crown pack unnecessarily.
If they go out of the game to buy crown pack instead of checking the issue then this is a really silly thing to do. At this point you're the one that's white-knighting for people who make stupid decisions in life.

And if it's about impulsive spending of the crowns that you already have on your account I'd say that this hypotetical person could submit a ticket, explain the situation and ask for a refund for that additional slot you bought. If they word it nicely without unnecesary rage they'll be sure to get it. I even got refunded for the free race change token (one of the three everyone got) I used by accident some time ago, so you'll sure get a refund for something you actually bought.

EDIT2: Spelling errors. I hope I got them all.

Thanks for the answer here. Logged in with 10 slots full, expected the create character button to be available. Logged out checked forums to see if I missed something.

Can easily understand how someone could get confused and buy the slot with crowns only to find out later they didn't need to.

I'd suggest lodging a ticket to get it removed. Cost of ownership/support on this should encourage better design for this stuff in the future which isn't confusing.
