Should you improve popular set drops in preferred traits to gold before selling?

I just got purple breeches of necropotence divines, and I'm trying to figure out if I should improve it to gold before selling, or if I'd be better of selling the wax separately. I'm on PC NA. Not sure if I have the best info on prices, so thought I'd ask you fine folks!

Same here. I already have more gold than I'll ever need.

    Why bother checking the price?

    You limit your buyers.

Somebody with no gold mats might appreciate it. Somebody with ample gold mats will look for the purple one to gold themselves.

Also, many people don't even bother golding armor as the benefits are negligible compared to golding weapons.

8 tempers ~5k each, ~40k. If Golding yields more than 40k extra, then just on the math it is worth it. However, it might not sell. Listing fees and Guild cut need to also be taken into consideration.

Edit: I voted 'Rarely worth it' would be more accurate.

Purple is probably the way to go, sometimes even just blue for jewellery.

I find there is limited use for gold in ESO so don't really see the need to bother with the whole trading guild system.

When you need a set like necropotence or mother's sorrow in all divines, it's nice to gave gold. Unless you want to spend a week or two farming overland bosses. Or worse yet, what if you need a pvp set like spell strategist or raveger? You better either have gold or a lot of very good & rich friends.

I run 15 toons. And changing builds gets expensive. If I am buying gear, I'm looking for a deal and probably not going to spend gold on gold gear. Kutas though, can never get enough.

And when I sell gear, I am not wasting my gold mats in hopes that someone will dole out the extra gold to buy the nore expensive item.

Of course, having 100-200k is nice, but that's pretty easy to get without trading. What I mean is that you don't really need millions of gold in this game. Not like you need to buy a new set of Necropotence every week.

I have not golded an item before selling it, so I don't know.

As a buyer, the ways that make a golded item appealing to me are:

    1. I want it badly and it's not available in a lesser quality.
    2. Hmm, there is no 2

You usually won’t be able add any more than the cost of the upgrade mats to the price, and you’ll be limiting your possible buyers to those that were planning on golding it (many players just leave their gear purple).

I do not think a poll is needed to try to decide what to do with gear one wants to sell. It should be obvious that upgrading an item to gold, and hence it's price, will make it harder to sell and does not guarantee you will get your moneys worth out of it. Simple logic states that much since it is so easy to upgrade gear to gold.

    Not worth the trouble ...

When i shop for gear, i buy the cheapest item with the right trait regardless of the quality and then i upgrade it myself.

Funny thing is, you can always see who "improved" their gear trying to squeeze more money out of buyers because the "health" bar of the item won't be full.

There was/is a build that calls for a necropotence inferno staff. When a lot of players were scrambling to get that staff the price difference in purple and gold made it worth while to improve. That is assuming you aren't going to run low on materials doing it. Most the time though you do better with making rare items purple and the easier to get stuff just leave as is.

I've only bumped weapons up to gold for selling. The armor I tend to leave as is or just make purple.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

I upgrade top tier staves to gold before selling. I have tons of Rosin and they are slow sellers. I can basically sell the purple staff + 8 rosins together, often at a premium. I don't upgrade clothing to gold as I can sell wax almost instantly for a very reasonable price. I don't really need to pack it together with a piece of gear.

Generally no for armor and yes for some weapons. A blue precise MS inferno is worth <70k, a friend of mine sold a gold one for 250k the other day (MM price is >200k). People sometimes pay ridiculous prices for golded items and it's worth exploiting their stupidity

In this case expensive weapons should be gold, agree of making bis level armor purple.

I'm asking because when I look at the traders from big trading guilds, it seemed they're always selling things like infused destro staffs of high demand sets in gold quality, not purple. Simple logic suggested that maybe the professional traders know something I don't. So I thought I'd ask.

I sold a weapon recently for ~200K on PC/NA. It was purple. I had been fortunate enough to buy it for 5K, so that was a nice profit.

    Its depends really.

On the one (and more common) hand, you are pricing yourself out of a particularly majority demographic since many place less value on yellowing gear vs weapons as the margins are much smaller, and many players have less disposable gold to make that purchase seem worth it while likely having enough upgrade mats to do it themselves. And those that truly benefit from every point of statistical optimization definitely would just purchase cheap and upgrade themseves since they are likely established players.

I never see anyone buy gold dropped sets. I'm sure it happens, but its rare it seems.

I think it's always worth to improve to purple before selling, but gold seems to be where most people will balk at the price and would prefer buying purple and improving it themselves.
