It sounds like when you went to dye your armor before, you had the outfit selected so the dyes went into the outfit rather than directly onto the armor. If you had to pay gold to finalize the dyes, then that's definitely what happened.
If you want to use the outfit style without the dyes, then you'll need to erase the dyes and set up the styles that you want, and then save it as Outfit 1. If you still want your armor dyed, then make sure "No Outfit" is selected and redo the dyes.

Use the "Clear Slot" option to remove an outfit style and "Clear Color" for the dyes.
