New player, new character - build suggestions?

davidtb1982
Hi all,

I’m level 6 on a character. I’m also a new player so want to get the best start. Struggling to make sense if builds and all that.

I have a Breton, nightblade, I haven’t really had a chance to increase Magicka stamina or health.

Any suggestions on how I approach building skills and sets I should try to get a start on? Would be good to know why you’re suggesting also so that I can learn what sets and build can do.

Cheers

    Welcome!

The game does not really start with respect to requiring better builds and gear, until you are level 50 and into the championship points, and actually until after you are at championship 160 points.

Moving through those early levels is a great opportunity to do story content, gain skill points and learn how the game works and the gear and build you have is far less important.

In the mean time you need training armour to speed things up, often folks have training armour for every ten levels or so, I tend to have them at level 15 and 30 ish, cos I am lazy (as in I have crafted gear that sits in my house ready for any new character reaching those levels). Up to level 15 I just wear whatever I find laying around. In fact I have taken a character all the way to 50 just picking up found armour as I did story content, delvs and dungeons etc. For instance there are some good sets in Fungal Grotto and that is one of the easiest dungeons to run early on.

If you join a guild, there will likely be plenty of people you can speak with who can help you get gear and provide advice or craft you decent training armour. There are often guilds asking for new players in zone chat, find one that is friendly and helpful to new players. I would encourage you to do this sooner rather than later. You can leave a guild anytime you like if its not to your liking.

You can also check out content providers on You tube (and on their own websites), like Alcast and xynode. Both provide some really good builds, particularly Alcast who also breaks his builds down into beginner, intermediate and best in slot, gear. Though these builds will be more relevant when you get to Championship point 160, it can help you see what to aim for or provide inspiration and guidance for your own build.

    Happy gaming!

Honestly at this point i wouldn't worry about any of that yet.

Your character is scaled to CP160 (which is the max level of the world around you) plus you are still buffed quite substantially by the level scaling.
Save the hunt for good set gear until you get to CP160. For now, any dropped sets will do.

It's more important to level your skills but don't panic, there's plenty of skill points in the game to max everything eventually.
Use the levels up to 50 to find out if you like stamina or magicka play better and then focus on one of the two.

I have 4 max level characters that have all armor types and all weapon type skills (and their morphs) and passives maxed and i can respec each character into anything i want them to be (magicka, stamina, health, damage, healer, tank)
Again, you can always switch later on and respec.

If you are into crafting, start researching items NOW. Spend skill points to speed up research. Leveling all crafts is a loooong and tedious process.
    And feed your horse daily.

The best set for leveling quickly is the "Trainee" set and it drops in every alliance's starter zones.

Make your way to Khenarthi's Roost and do a few treasure chest farm runs and you'll be swimming in Trainee gear of your level ...

Here's a map from my mapping AddOn, red coin icons are possible treasure chest spawn locations, yellow coin icons are possible thieves troves spawn locations (you'll need the DLC for those), yellow map icons are treasure map locations and the blue icons are skyshard locations.

Wow thanks that really helpful. Just a quick question, how do I begin researching items for crafting?
Also I have three mounts, didn’t know I had to feed them. How do I do this?

Seriously, thank you very much for the advice. 🙏

First off, [K] menu for your skills. On the left side is a basic guide to picking skills. You have 5 types: beginner, tank, magicka DPS, stamina DPS, and healer.

Secondly, Bretons have good magicka sustain. You are better off with a magicka based build, but if you go off type, you can build a stam DPS with good cloak uptime. Also, unless you choose tank, put your skill points into you chosen damage type. Healer is magic of course. At around level 45 you get a free attribute and skill point reset scroll. Save them. At CP 160, with food buff and standard gear, put enough points into health to just hit 20,000. Dump the rest into your damage type. Use the guide and experiment with skills for now. Later you can use your skill reset.

Nightblades do mostly magic damage, and disease on the stam morph. Look for sets that work with those based on your build type.

I'm going to assume you are leaning magicka dps. Get Julianos, craftable set that boosts spell damage, Mother's sorrow, Deshaan drop for spell critical, or War Maiden, Vvanderfall drop that boosts mag damage. For utility, Shadow Dancer, Greenshade drop for stealth speed, will help your sneaking. Also use destro staffs. Single targets on fire staff, aoe on lightning bar. Devine for PVE with Thief or another magicka boost mundus stone, impenetrable for PvP. You can also put infused on large pieces, head, chest and legs.

That should get you started for your level. Also look into Seducer as a low level filler set, 2 trait craftable for sustain as you farm the other stuff. Once you have the basics down, you'll be able to theory craft on your builds later.
Main: Drio Azul ~ DC, Redguard, Healer/Magicka Templar ~ NA-PC

You research traits at crafting stations. You need to have an item of that trait in either your inventory or bank to research that trait. The item will be *destroyed* when used for research.

You will have to do this for all crafts (woodworking, blacksmithing, clothier) and all possible items and all 9 traits.
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Traits
Which is why this takes forever and you need to start asap.

As for your horse(s), thankfully the training is for your character, not your horse so you only have to do this once (per character).
Every major city has a stable, find the stable master and talk to them. There are three categories for horse training:
    Speed, Stamina and Capacity
    https://elderscrollsonline.info/guides/mounts

I usually start with maxing Capacity because it's nice to have more bag space, then Speed so your horse can go faster and last Stamina which really is mostly useful in PvP.
