OK my fellow lefties. How are you playing mouse and keyboard?

I usually play with a controller and so use to the console look, I stuck with that. I have switched to Xbox for a while and haven't played on my laptop in ages. I had an incling to try it out on PC just to see what I have since I am on Xbox I am missing a house and mounts and pets. So I wanted to see what if I really am missing anything or not.

So I reinstalled ESO again. Gah, PC looks so different. I thought, let me try and get use to the PC look. Thing is, I can't play with mouse and key board. If I hook up the controller it goes to console layout then.

So I want to see how my fellow lefties are playing on the mouse and keyboard. If I have to, I will go back to controller. I just want to see if I can try and learn mouse and keyboard.

I do have the Logitech mouse that has 4 buttons on each side. Not sure what I can use them for.I like to know what a good combination I should use on mouse and keyboard.

Any suggestions anyone?

I use the arrow keys for moving, swap jump and chat keys, use number minipad for skills, with 0 for ultimate.

I also have the e and r keys on my mouse, as well as auto run and sprint.

I find it works really well.

    Muscle Memory.

Takes a week or two to retrain your hands and fingers, but you can do it. I remember going from console back to PC back in 2003. It took me a day or two before I felt comfortable, and a week later it was second nature. But now there is no going back and using a controller feels weird.

Then again, you can use a Controller and Controller UI on the PC, so your not forced to Keyboard and Mouse.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I'm in the process of learning this. You're right, takes time to retrain myself. But I hope the benefits will be huge.

Number one - I HATE my Logitech keyboard. Can't wait to get a new one. No stinking light to show you the Caps lock is on.

    Never buying their stuff again.

As to what I do, I use mouse + W for everything. keep moving forward and character turns with the mouse. Mouse on right, left hand on board.

Left hand is comfortable against the side of the keyboard, so left hand is using fore finger to do all the work.

Causes problems if Im in a hectic situation if the hand shifts while I'm watching the screen

I don't believe muscle memory exists. I believe it's like playing piano. Either you Can or you Can Not. There is no middle road. And it's all based on the specific brain driving the truck. Either it will be easy for you or it will always be a nuisance (like it is for me) Been using keyboards for Way too many years without any changes to believe otherwise.

1 - yes muscle memory; you will retrain yourself quickly enough - but that also means if you have a new setup you want to learn cuz it sounds better/easier - you can retrain again.

As a leftie and life-PC gamer, I have never been good at console controls. And when I learned on PC games as a child, back in the early 80s, I started with the arrow keys so that's what I've just stuck to all these years later. (Proud Keyboard Turner!) LOL

But what I do is my mouse - or rather my trackball (as I prefer trackballs) is on the LEFT of the keyboard for my LEFT hand. And my RIGHT hand is situated on the arrow keys.

My 4 trackball buttons are programmed specific to whatever game I'm playing. The two main buttons I treat as the two basic mouse buttons - main left/right click is usually weapon attack/block and those generally stay throughout games. But the other two buttons I program depending on the game - for TESO I have them programmed to input the keys for Use/Enter/Pickup/Accept - so like when you're taking mail attachments and then deleting mail, or looting, or responding to whatever menu choice - I don't have to use the keyboard at all, I just click the trackball button for that. I also often assign one of the buttons to auto-summon mount. These buttons, at least in TESO, are really up to whatever you would find most handy to have on your mouse hand.

I don't like WASD setup, never have. So I just moved the "idea" of it, centered over the arrow keys, instead. Arrow keys for movement, fingers up to the six keys (home/end, delete/insert, pgup/pgdn) for whatever commands I assign them - and if I need more keys, the numpad is within easy reach - and I program those as well. (7 is usually my autorun button, 4 is usually walk/run toggle, in TESO the 1 numpad key is the one that drops me to free-mouse-pointer mode, 2 activates the Choice from the actionbarwheel - for me its health pots)

That's how I've played for decades now - in all types of games. Doin' just fine.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Yes I prefer using the arrow keys is since that is what I did in the 90's.

So for those using the arrow keys or the key pad, what buttons do you use for skills and what not?

Never used WASD in any game ever! I have a left handed Naga MMO mouse (i think they are NLA last i looked).

    My key-binds are:

Forward: (Physical) Left Mouse button (mapped to logical right button because left-handed mouse)
Attack: (Physical) Right Mouse button (mapped to logical left button because left-handed mouse)
    Back: Down Arrow
    Strafe Left: Left Arrow
    Strafe Right: Right Arrow
    Jump: Up Arrow
    Sprint: Num-0
    Crouch: CTRL
    Interrupt: Right Shift
    Skills 1-5: Backslash | Delete | End | Page Down | Num-4
Ultimate: Home | Key on Naga Keypad
    Block: Key on Naga Keypad
    Quickslot: Backspace
    Interact: Enter
    Weapon Swap: Mouse Wheel Up
    Synergy: Mouse Wheel Down

I use the six grouped buttons above the arrow keys (pageup/dn, home/end, delete/insert group) for the actual weapon-action bar attacks. Six buttons- six weapon skills - so for me it was easy/obvious lol.

Off the top of my head (some keys are less used and so not remembered as clearly):

    Numpad Keys:

    1-Mouse Pointer Mode Toggle
2-Drink Potion (Item Select from the QuickSlot Wheel), Holding "2" brings up the "wheel" itself
3 -no use right now I don't think
    4- autorun
    5- no use right now
6 - weapon ability bar swap from 1/2
    7 - walk/run toggle (rper)
    8 & 9 no use yet
the "." key - is my Synergy button
SHIFT is my Sprint Button (classic gamer!)
    Spacebar is still Jump
    Crouch is still CTRL

That's my setup - as best I remember right now =D. YMMV

I used arrow keys for direction until around the mid 2000s. As games got more complicated, I got used to WASD because it made hitting other keys easier, while subsequently making hitting the wrong keys easier. For a while, I played shooters with gamepad in one hand and mouse with the other. I suppose gamepad + mouse could be possible with a MMO mouse.

P.S. Any of you players from the 80s still use or break the habit of reverse up/down?

I'm not a leftie but my elder brother is, so when we got our first pc somewhere in the early 90s, he'd put the mouse on the left side. As a result, I'm better at using it with my left hand now.

Arrow keys for movement seem more natural as well, the numkeys are for skills. Because naturally I'm a right hander, I can use that well enough too. And mouse with the left.

LOL. That was what my family did. I put the mouse on the left side of the keyboard, the entire family was too lazy to move the mouse to the right side and used their left hand for the mouse LMFAO.

I ask, why not move it, it's not glued down, but they all just adapted lol. Kids I could understand, they don't know any better and adapt to anything really good. My wife on the other hand. Never could understand that one.

Im left handed and I use the keyboard/ mouse the normal way. I've never found the ergonomics of left hand mouse to fit me. Plus, in a game like this, mouse control is less important than the keyboard control.

I'm another one who uses the arrow keys and number pad with my right hand.

I have my skills on the 1-5 keys, 6 is synergy, 7 is quick slots, 8 is interrupt and 9 is ultimate. 0 is dodge, enter is crouch (I use sneak attacks on a lot of my characters) + is weapon swap and the 4 across the top are E, R, F and X.

I also have open menu (alt), mount, walk, draw/stock weapon and maybe 2 other things I rarely use on the block of 6 keys above the arrows. Oh, and jump is right ctrl and sprint is right shift.

I also have some of those bound to extra buttons on my mouse. I use a Logitech G400 (which is technically a right-handed mouse, but I can reach the two thumb buttons with the side of my finger), which only has a few extra buttons, but it's enough for the really important things I want quick access to.

Partly because I spent a huge amount of time working on random PC/servers, with right handed setups & partly due to not finding a left handed mouse I like! (are there any decent extra button left handed mice?)

Yep :) Trying to figure out layouts the other way is almost too hard in gaming, though for everyday stuff I'm fairly ambidextrous with the mouse.

I use the number pad keys for skills. 1 to 5 for the skills, with 0 as the ultimate.

As I mentioned before, I would highly suggest swapping the jump and text chat keys (space and enter), otherwise you might start a text chat during a battle. If you jump by mistake instead, then it is usually no big deal.

Hello fellow sinisters. PC user here.

    1) Most people use a mouse in their dominant hand and for most people that's their right hand, so I decided to use the mouse in my dominant hand (my left hand).

    2) It didn't take long to get used to using a mouse with my left hand, with buttons switched so that "L-click" is my index finger, like it is for right handed people (on their right hand). This is for everything on my PC not just ESO.

    3) I got the best ambidextrous gaming mouse iI could find: https://en.roccat.org/Mice/Kova

    4) I got a Logitech G-13 to use with my right hand, for games.https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126050

    This works for me.
