New player and dumb on some of this stuff. If I wanted to play a stamina based DK, am I gimping myself as it looks like all the class abilities are magicka based? Do you still use some of these even with a stamina build? I plan to use dual wield and bows fwiw. Thanks for any help or suggestions

Better yet, if I am not a power gamer can I mix magic and stamina for a fun build that isn't a totally gimped wuss? I don't care about being super powered or anything, I'm just playing for fun.

Pve or PvP? For pve you get a tons of class ablitys, venomous claw, noxious breath, take flight and there are a tons of utility in the class, fragmented shield gives 6 seconds of major mending, green dragons blood is a percentage based heal based on missing health, choking talons for immobilizing targets. Yes, you will be using a ton of weapon skills too but so does every other Stam build.

For what content? Overland pve is so easy you can literally do anything you want there but as soon as you start doing vet content, hybrids are a liability and you will have to spec onto a more specialized build.

Better to go purely magicka or stamina for damage.

However, it's fine and normal to go stamina for damage and use important magicka utility skills. It's also fine and normal to go magicka for all or almost all your skills, and use stamina just for dodging, blocking, sprinting and so on.

Thanks. So I should still put all my points into stamina, and leave no points in magicka?

I don't know how green you are, but the base abilities that you see in any skill line can be morphed. Every class ability starts with have a magicka base cost. There are certain skills, that when reach Rank IV to be morphed, have the option to change into an ability that costs stamina. That being said, there are 15 skills for every class (not including ultis because they cost ultimate points) and only 3-4 are able to become stamina morphs ( I don't remember the exact numbers for each class). Hence why damage for stamina characters usually comes from weapon skill lines.

With all this being said, you can play however you want. There have been several occasion where I used magicka based skills on my stamina sorc while maintaining a decent damage output (no BiS, but decent) and having a lot more fun with it. Honestly, if you are not looking to be the best dps in the world, then go ham with whatever skills you find cool. Sit back and enjoy the game, because despite what people say about the DK class nerfs, they still have some of the best looking abilities out of everyone else.

I like that idea. Thanks. Just play for fun with what sounds cool.

DK is coolest class imo, but somewhat hard for the beginner and not very useful in overland/normal dungeons. I'd suggest trying warden or templar as first toon, they are flashy and easy-going most skills are effective from the start without necessity for correct build/sets etc.
If you gonna PVP from the start, then DK good choice.

Another way to level a DK is to go the tank route. You might choose 2 health, 1 stamina, 1 magicka as you level your stats. The goal is to survive through the fight as your dots work for you. Most of your survival skills are magicka only, and expensive. In this build, I would recommend using weapon/shield on main bar with anything else on your back bar.
