Doesn't have to be for chronic gamblers. According to my billing history I've bought over 36,000 crowns in the time I've been playing and all of them have gone on direct sale items and DLC.
I'm tempted to get a 21,000 crown pack now. It will take me months, probably over a year, to spend them but I know I can trust myself to only buy stuff I actually want (I still have 3,000 crowns left from last time I bought some), I'm just not sure if it's worth the up front cost for a slight saving over the cheaper packs, when there are other things I could do with the money and I don't actually know much of what ZOS is going to sell in future. It might be better for me to space the purchases out and spend a little bit more overall.And now for the regular dilemma. I've seen the datamined stuff, but I'm not sure I want it, with a lot of things it's hard to tell until I see it in the game and can check out things like animations and dyes. I do like the idea of the alfiq banker, but it's relatively rare that I'd find a banker assistant useful so I never thought the existing one was worth it (even with discounted crowns) and don't think the novelty of an alfiq skin would change that, especially if it really does cost 10,000 crowns.

Never gamble, never buy crates, but everything I've bought directly, I still use. I get a lot of enjoyment from it, so it's money well-spent. In a similar way, I'm weighing up getting a smaller pack, or the big better-value one - for the same reasons! RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend. I will miss you forever. If you want to get them on sale - yes.
Crown Sales happen a few times a year - only. So its not a monthly or bimonthly occurrence.
If you know in the next six months you might want more crowns - then buy the amount you are comfortable with. How many will depend on how much you want to spend.
Check the different sale prices of the different amounts - sometimes the "full discount" is only at the highest amount spent and sometimes its the same no matter what amount you buy. But only you can answer how much you want to spend.
I always try to at least buy SOME at each crown sale (unless I've just got tons saved up), because I never want to pay the full price (yuck!) and I don't know when I"ll want to spend vs when the next sale will be.
So I'd say if you have any desire to have more crowns in the next six months, for any reason, and you have the ability to - go ahead and buy now.0 -

Oh I know, I've been playing ESO since shortly before the crown store launched so I'm not new to any of this. Just thinking "out loud" really because I don't have anything better to do.
I've still got 3,000 crowns left over from last time I bought some, and I won't be spending any more this month unless there's stuff I want which wasn't in the showcase. At this point I've got so many mounts, pets, costumes etc. that I need to really like one to actually buy it and I never bought much of the other stuff so that 3k could last me months. (I'd buy more DLC, but 2/3 of them are just dungeons.)
Like I said in a later post I'm sure I'd spend 21,000 crowns eventually, just not sure the saving is worth the up front cost vs. buyer less and using the remaining money for other things.
