Random dungeon PUG today

Curious to know everyone's thoughts on a random dungeon run I had in normal Direfrost Keep today.

I was on my low-level tank (yes, an actual tank, even though it's just normal) and my friend was on his low-level dps. Everything was going fine until the last boss fight, when the other dps, also low-level, went stood at the very edge of the room, doing nothing. Not as though he had DC'd, mind you, but deliberately going to the very edge of the room and standing there. Zero communication with the group.

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the mechanic. The boss teleports over to where the motionless player is, places her life drain beam on him, and heals back up to full health. After this happened a couple of times, my friend and I voted to kick the non-participating dps. When the vote failed, we chose to wipe. We voted to kick multiple times, but we were overruled each time by the healer, even though I was typing in chat to explain why we needed to kick. So my friend and I teleported back to the entrance and waited for the healer to come to their senses. Finally they did. We got another dps and finished the last fight easily.

What do you think? Why was the other dps just standing at the periphery? Was he trolling us, or only afk? (If so, what a boss fight to choose for going afk!) Why wouldn't the healer vote kick, or even communicate with us about it?

My friend and I are not the kind of players who would ever kick anyone for low dps. We could have 3-manned the final boss once the non-participating dps was dead, even with my tank's crummy damage. But at that point we were way too annoyed and frustrated to grant an absent player the XP bonus for that fight.

What would you have done in this scenario?

Moral of the story, bring another friend so vote kick never fails

I would have completed it and reported them at the end if they still failed to communicate. Perhaps they are, as SoLooney said, a leecher. In that case they may have received other reports and will hopefully be punished.

Direfrost keep is cursed. From all the strange and inadequate people I met in PUGs, lion's share of them were in Direfrost.

Sounds like a troll and initiating a vote kick was what I would have done.
I had the same type of experience a year ago in Banished Cells. We we were at the final boss and one of the group was hiding a good ways back in the hall. I initiated a vote kick it didn't pass so I left. It was just a random and I didn't lose much by leaving.

pugging alone - you are vulnerable

pugging with 1 friend - you are immune to kicks

pugging with 2 mates - now you are the KICKMASTER! =P

Maybe he/she was protesting because you didn't do hard mode? Or wait, this was on normal...

    I'm not sure.

It's possible your first vote failed because the healer was too busy during the fight to realize the vote. After the first wipe - it's also possible the healer refused to kick because a lot of us consider it bad form to kick after only the first wipe. So he or she may have just wanted to give the DPS another chance.

As a highlevel tank I still enjoy running normal dungeons. However the whoke day is basicly what OP posted. What the heck is going on today?

It's good advice. I wish we had another friend to bring, maybe we will in future. We generally duo everything. Reporting was an option that we didn't really think of, in part because it was so hard to tell what was going on...? Maybe we should have. It did feel like trolling.

You're right that we could have left, but we would get the timed lock-out for it, and the next players to come in might have completed it, giving the XP bonus to a possible troll, while we were the ones to be penalized. Irks me somewhat tbh. Also, normal Direfrost isn't hard, but it's not Fungal Grotto I, either. It takes a small chunk of time, and we were doing the quest for the XP and skill point.

Punchline to the whole thing is, the healer had crown, and they tried to queue us all for another round immediately after completion. I was like, you've got to be joking.

The problem with that is "KICKMASTER" often turns into TROLLMASTER and pre-made groups end up abusing their ability to coordinate the kicking of others.

All in all - the OP had a single wipe and the wayward DPS ended up getting kicked and the run was saved. I can think of much worse.

Very strange. I can only imagine it was a troll though. You said you wiped, but that would mean that the afk player would have had to accept the resurrection, meaning they couldn't actually be completely afk.

Even a leech would realize that to get the xp, they would need to stay dead so that the others can kill the boss for them. At least for up till near the end of the fight.

Sounds like he was intentionally trolling and that's what vote kick is supposed to be used for. Good thing that it stuck eventually and you got the kick otherwise you'd have to just leave and start over. I'd even report for trolling and harassment at that point too.

It is strange. if it was a leech why would they wait until the very end to start leeching? If they were AFK how were they accepting resurrections? The OP says the player was "deliberately" causing the group grief (which is possible). But considering there was no communication and I'm going to assume the OP does not have ESP how does he know that? The player may have just not understood the fight. I've been with plenty of players who did not know to interrupt her healing channel and he could have been skirting the periphery of the fight in an effort to avoid it.

None of us can answer this. He could have been a troll, could have been someone's kid playing their account, could have been an idiot.

This is the real answer. Really the answer to everyone's GF woes. As someone who does not have to use GF to get groups for any dungeon, we do often queue with just 3 of us to see what we get. We have on occasion found the need to kick because they were a true idiot or jerk and we chose to not put up with it.

Did it to one person just before the last boss and pretty sure they were doing their pledge. That is what they get for being a jerk.

    It's not the "real answer".

If someone is being an obvious jerk or a troll it's more likely than not the group will vote to kick them without there having to be a conspiracy involved to kick them.

In my experience - friends who queue up together so they can coordinate the kicking of others causes way more problems than it solves. The urge to play God on the internet is too great for them to resist and they end booting people for the most absurd reasons. Or they literally just do it for the fun of it because they get their jollies off that way. I've said for years now people who queue up together should only be able to count as a single vote toward kicking someone for that very reason. The worst kind of trolling I've seen on this game has been done by pre-made groups in the activity finder abusing the kick function.

I agree it is very strange if the leeching was just at the end. I honestly don't know what to think. I try to be a good teammate in PUGs and give people the benefit of the doubt. I've run Direfrost with players who don't understand break free, and I've taught it to them.

But this guy was just standing completely still, no light attacks, nothing, for a long time. I stopped taunting eventually and the group was in an embarrassing state, atronachs running everywhere, the healer fleeing like a madwoman spamming mushrooms, Drodda bouncing around healing herself. It was not a quick fight, and the other dps did not move a muscle.

I've had many smooth runs in Direfrost on vet. This one on normal was a circus.

He may have went AFK to look the fight up on youtube after he was yelled at for not breaking the first couple of channels. Who knows...

Either way - the DPS was kicked and the run was saved and the group only had a single wipe. This wasn't a big deal and the system worked.
