Why does glass armor dye like crap?

Everything's so faded, even the darkest colors. I went with a combination of Coldharbour Ash Black and Atmoran Bronze on my armor, everything looked awesome up until the point I dyed the glass helmet and it looked like someone pulled it out of a bleach bucket. I read some argument that it's because of glass's natural reflection of things so colors look worse, but it's not *actual* glass, it's malachite

    Because ZOS wants it to.

All the motif and costume materials need an update pass on how they take color, and which shaders they use. Further, the undyeable areas need to be made fully dyeable. This likely requires adding more color slots to existing pieces, which is something that should happen anyway.

Does it need to happen ? yes.

Will it happen ? not likely.

You've already led yourself to your own answer. The properties defining how Glass armor takes pigment are defined by the malachite used, and those properties have been extended over to Volcanic Viridian as well.

It seems that all the new styles/motifs dye like crap.

Nope, they are more consistent then old sets in terms of what depth of dye can be applied to different materials. You can't make wood look like steel, leather like wood and steel like leather, this is how it should be.

Paint doesn't stick to glass very well

I feel you OP. The glass style is one of my favorites and i wish it dyed better. Golds and blues look good with it.

I found that the Skyrim-style gold & green looked nice with it.

    I disagree.

Granted, dyes don't always look the same across different styles so it can be tricky, but experiment and you'll often find dyes which work.

eg. I typically don't care for Vine Green. It's too pale / washed out. But on glass armour it's lovely. I use it with Divine Gold and Lamae's White.

On my dunmer I go all out with dark purples and black. Gorgeous.
