Only when I forget that I get better performance by playing from the launcher.
Yeah, I'm lucky enough to have been playing before Nov 2016, so I can still run the game through the launcher. Its served me well during those times when ESO isn't working through Steam.
ESO wasn't available on Steam back when I bought it.
Also I don't buy or run games through Steam if I can avoid it because I have no interest in the 'features' it adds so for me it's just one more thing that can go wrong when I'm trying to play a game. Also even though it's rarely a problem having to be online and logged in to play a single-player, offline game bothers me.

I play ESO on Steam. I've had login issues only twice I think, and they got cleared up pretty quickly (within a couple of hours) by ZOS. When I bought ESO, I didn't even realize I could buy it outside of Steam.
I have non-Steam versions of Morrowind and Oblivion, but I later bought Steam versions so I could play them at home, then resume them on my laptop while traveling. Personally, I think Steam is pretty okay!
