Could use some help with leveling

I came back to the game on to my lvl 35 dk and the more I level up the harder it feels to kill things. I've looked up some build guides and it seems I was headed in the right direction going tank but I just do way too little damage and struggle too with even one enemy.

As a frame of reference I'm trying to level up by experiencing the world instead of grinding mobs with exp boosts, and I'm okay with that.

Could improving my crafted equipment to superior boost my damage output? And if so can I keep using my lvl 36 armor all the way up to lvl 45?

I prefer to level as a DPS and use the free respec scroll you get at lvl 45 to spec to tank once you hit the CP levels. Its much faster if you can just mow down crowds with area of effects skills.

Also you can go to Alik'r and type an x into zone chat and get into the dolmen grind parties that run there for exp. Its not the fastest way to level, but it is the easiest.

2x yes. Upgrading weapons will increase your dmg output. Armor your defense.
Traits/set bonus/enchantments/... will also increase with quality.

Either craft or get someone to craft you gear at the level youre at, in purple with training, either hundings and Night Mothers Gaze, or julianos and seducers, and then just wear that upto 50 (or upto 160) and everyday try to win 1st or 2nd place in a battle ground. Do this during an event, and with an exp scroll (you get them from the daily rewards) will get you to where you need to be in no time.

There's nothing wrong with power leveling a bit and returning to the content you want to do after that.
