It's 9pm March 31 where I am. I swear, the worst thing about the web being 24/7/365 is that it's utterly unusable for 48 of those hours each year :p

ESO has never been F2P outside of brief trial periods.

Well of course the base game costs something but the sub is optional, that typically qualifies as F2P.

    Good one XD :)

Though I won't be surprised if ESO will go full F2P sometime in the next 3 months to 1 year.
I won't go into much detail here since this discussion is meant to be funny and related to April's Fools Day.
Some videos I recorded for fun: Main character:
PC EU main: Universe - AD magicka Sorcerer, Former Emperor, Grand Overlord, The Merciless, Trial Bosses Solo Champion
Top alts: Genius(stamina/sagicka Dragonknight) The Force(stamina Nightblade) and other chars.
PC NA main: The Magic - AD magicka Sorcerer
Started playing ESO in beta & early access

Actually, no. This model is called Buy to Play, not Free to Play.

Not having a mandatory subscription does not make ESO free to play, free to play means exactly that, you can install the game and play it without ever spending any money what so ever. ESO is buy to play, you have to buy the game in order to play it.

I get this is April 1st and all, but, I wouldn't object to them releasing a free version where Stonefalls / Glenumbra / Auridon (and the starting zones just prior) are the only zones they can play. Possibly have a level cap.

That is what the frequent trials are for.

Yes, i think it is possible. Something like Anet did with their GW2.

Base version of the game is so cheap that game already may be considered free to play.

That's a bit more extensive - you can play the entire base game (including things like dungeons) and reach the maximum level, but you have no access to expansion or living world (DLC) maps, which at this point is about 1/2 the game, or masteries and the things they unlock.

There's also a bunch of restrictions which are mainly aimed at stopping people using free accounts for trolling, gold selling or farming but which also work to encourage free players to buy the game. For example they don't get login rewards and can't trade most items with other players. Oh and they can't talk in map (zone) chat.

I think it could be a good idea for ZOS to set something like that up. I know quite a few people who don't bother with the existing free trials because it takes too long to download the game, or it's never at a time when they can play much. But it would need careful planning to make sure it couldn't be abused and didn't give trolls and easy way to make trouble without worrying about the account getting banned.

It is free to play already once you buy the game, you don't have to pay to play... so???

I know that, ive played GW2 from the beginning (August, 2012).
That's why i said "something like Anet did".
