This mount is ugly anyway...

Not how this works. They know it's only whales that'll buy this. If they get a hundred whales to spend obscene amounts of money on their crates, it's worth it to them. I'm pretty sure there's more than a hundred whales in a game played by millions (unfortunately).JUST...DON'T...BUY...

Not how this works at all.
Realistically, 600 gems will usually set you back around $80-$120, which is still horrifically expensive, but not as horrifically expensive. That said, if your luck is sufficiently horrible, $300 can net you as low as ~500 gems.
While I applaud the idea of saying, "yeah, this is the dollar to gems ratio," truth is, it's gambling, and they payouts can be pretty terrible at times.

Show me a crown crate unboxing video on YouTube where someone gets 600 gems for $80-$120 because I've watched several and even with extreme luck and getting a duplicate APEX they're lucky to get 400 for that much.

I suspect it's actually because people who may have otherwise been tempted to buy crown crates could actually get a taste of the amount of god-awful crap in them.
