Briarheart v Toothrow

I've been playing the game for a while but I'm now starting to work on actually getting my character to vdungeons and trials. In looking at several builds (Stamplar/DW/Bow) many of them are now using Briarheart weapons/jewelry for non-trials gear. In looking through all of the medium stam sets I found Toothrow. Is there some mechanic or something that makes Briarheart the preferred set over Toothrow?

toothrow gives the Same unique buff you get from Weaponpower pots....aka 5pcs is useless, since you have pots up 100% of the time in PVE anyways.

2 things. First is the one already mentioned by @SaintSubwayy , Major Savagery is easily achieved from potions, and a stamplar can use Jabs that also has the same buff (and it does not stack).

Also, Briarheart is a timed buff, that means you can "proc" it (activate), and it stays on you even if you swap bars, that makes it a good frontbar set, and opens space for the mighty Maelstrom Bow on your backbar.

If you want some crit, theres a better version of Toothrow called "Leviathan", which drops on Crypt of Heards and gives a big critical chance bonus that stacks with Savagery.

Toothrow generally not desirable to wear because the 5 piece bonus can be gotten from a weapon crit potion or by slotting the fighter's guild ability Evil Hunter and its other morphs. You generally don't want to waste slots on sets that do something an ability or potion can do. If you're looking for a crit set that's easy to farm I recommend leviathan from crypt of hearts. If you pair 5 pieces of leviathan on the body with briarheart weapons and jewllery you'll have a strong set up.

Briarheart gives you a heal where thoothrow is pure damage. So it depends on what you need also leviathan is a better option it is pure stat pump so if you have major savagery from flying dagger it adds in but with toothrow it wouldn’t

Rather than Toothrow, have you considered either Hundings Rage, or Leviathan? I have listed below 4 really nice sets that are non-trials drops. You can mix these up and get some nice results.

    Hunding's Rage
    Craftable
(2 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina
(4 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(5 items) Adds 299 Weapon Damage

    Leviathan
    Crypt of Hearts
(2 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
(3 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(4 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(5 items) Adds 1924 Weapon Critical

    Spriggan's Thorns
    Bangkorai
(2 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
(3 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
(4 items) Adds 129 Weapon Damage
(5 items) Adds 3450 Physical Penetration

    Briarheart
    Wrothgar
(2 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(3 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
(4 items) Adds 833 Weapon Critical
(5 items) When you deal Critical Damage, you have a 10% chance to increase your Weapon Damage by 449 for 10 seconds. While this effect is active, your Critical Strikes heal you for 609 Health. This effect can occur once every 15 seconds.

Or simply a skill that can provide that same buff.

Just out of curiosity, does the heal from briarthorn crits stack with crit surge?

@Alowishus , it should. Keep in mind, though, there's a caveat with Briarheart heal - it has internal cooldown of one second, so it's a really small heal.

People above nailed it; Leviathan is a much better set, its bonus will stack with Savagery (that is best obtained elsewhere - potions is the most popular and universal source).

@John_Falstaff thanks for the quick reply. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know if Crit surge also has an internal cooldown of 1 second? And if so, does/would it share a cooldown with Briar?

Thanks all. I’ve crafted Hundings but I’m having a tough time finding BH rings to complete that 5 and was looking for an alternative. I’ll look for some of the others.

@croakie , you can find rings at guild traders (use TTC site to look for stuff), but if you're missing them, you can run Briarheart in daggers and three body pieces (daggers are freely available from a quest). If you'll go for Leviathan, then the set has a named dagger (I think with the powered trait) dropping in CoH2.

Nope, crit surge is completely separated from Briarheart, and has no internal cooldown. So having crit surge and good critical chance amounts to very good self-healing.

EDIT: As below poster said, it HAS a cooldown of 1s, although the heal is pretty high and can critical unlike briarheart. And their cooldowns are completely separated.

Nope, crit surge is completely separated from Briarheart, and has no internal cooldown. So having crit surge and good critical change amounts to very good self-healing.

crit surge definitely has a cool down, 1 second.
Invoke Meridia's name to gain Major Brutality, increasing your Weapon Damage by 20% for 33 seconds. While active, dealing a Critical Strike heals you for 2970 Health. This effect can occur once every 1 second. Increases the healing.

Oh! I stand corrected. I had the impression it had no internal cooldown since I always got massive amounts of healing from it. Thanks for heads-up!

Briarheart rings in the robust trait are next to impossible to find and go for huge amounts at a guild trader. If you can transmute, pick up the arcane rings for cheap and transmute them.
