✭✭I got the Pebble Pal, too, in addition to the Horse Stick Mount.
When you set him as your pet, he drops next to you. You then run away a bit, stand still, and then "poof" he appears again.
I also like my stick mount, though disappointed with the sprint animation. But the regular speed animation is hilarious (though slow). -

Instead, every time you move to a different spot, and stay still in that new spot for about three seconds, he drops from the air, literally from a puff of smoke.
