So, I've been kicking around in Reaper's March lately, and I've been kind of wondering where the inspiration for the architecture and scenery comes from. Indeed, I've wondered about a few places, and I thought I'd ask here and see what people thought.
Clearly, some places and architecture styles won't have real world counterparts (such as Telvanni Towers and Vvardenfell with its big mushrooms), but many places will.
For instance, the Gold Coast puts me in mind of Sicily or Southern Italy. Hews Bane makes me think of Arizona, or some of the craggier parts of Israel. Obviously, the Rift and Eastmarch are Nordic, drawing inspiration from Norse culture and the cold forests of Norway. Glenumbra and other Breton lands clearly draw from European scenery and architecture.
I've been thinking that Auridon kind of reminds me of Japan, what with the cherry blossom trees and such, but the architecture isn't very Japanese. Reaper's March has made me think of Spain, or perhaps parts of Africa? The architecture reminds me of Tibet, with the tall organic looking towers and lion statues.
So, what do you think? Where are the different zones and architectures drawing inspiration from?
