I've played off and on since the beta.

I'm also an on and off player. Not since beta but since launch.
I just cannot get into the class system.

Same. It's a total aberration for this IP.
I've never found a class that I can play beyond 30 levels or so without getting massively sick of it and eventually I just stop logging in for a few months.

While I hate an ES game having classes I've tolerated them in other games. The one class I might have liked was warden. But that got canned.

Prior to them uncanning wardens I bounced back and forth between sorcerer and templar, never loving either.

Unfortunately they didn't really uncan wardens who were originally ranged healers. Instead they crammed tanking in there too and gave them a stupid amount of buffs and nowhere near enough magicka damage abilities. Four. Just four. And with only about half a dozen more non class ones to choose from. Sucks so hard.

In terms of theme and style they're definitely me. But there's just not enough to them to enjoy for very long.
Then I try again, hoping I can stay. Any help for me or should I just call it quits for good? I've already bought Elsweyr so I'm going to try the necromancer but I don't have a lot of hope.

I'd say that depends on how much money you have to burn and whether you think you're getting value from it with this game.

I initially started playing planning to start a guild. Created it but never did anything with it. Wardens got canned. Spellcrafting never came. Wardens were eventually delivered but are extremely disappointing. I've been paying for the domain names every year but am not sure I will again.

Cos I think ESO may be a lost cause as an MMO. I can get some joy out of it as an occasional single player game and from housing. But that's it.
I've already bought Elsweyr so I'm going to try the necromancer but I don't have a lot of hope.

I've decided against buying it straight away. Maybe later in the year when it's on sale but even then I'm not sure.

Mechanically necromancer looks ok'ish but thematically they're so not my thing. I've already played several other ESO classes which mechanically are ok but not my thing. Don't love it. I shouldn't expect any different from necromancer.

And I'm sooooooo over the whole horse feeding / trait research etc. grind. I think I'd be happier not even trying necromancer and avoiding all of that.

Well, I remember how I reached cp160, first thing I done I crafted impenetrable hunding rage heavy armor with gold nirnhoned dual swords, only after some time I realized that this is crap traits and weight and weapon type for PVE :D
Those wonderful time when I was doing 10k dps on dunmer stamblade with all the possible dots applied and even skoria helm farmed on DK tank, which in his turn was using shielding enchantments on defensive weapons and infernal maw monster helm.

We all make some mistake I guess haha.
Also, I very enjoyed to become a werewolf. I've even respect in stam for build around ^^
This game have lot of fun thing to try but you need to be 160 1st to acces most armor and decent stat.
But it worth the time. I can't count the number of build I've made in 3 month !

I was the same when I first played the game. I got past that initial drudgery by focusing on making a crafter. Helped that I was a Templar because I could just smash puncturing sweeps whilst out and about gathering mats, researchable gear and so on. But the class was still inconsequential for over a year. Then something just clicked. That crafter is now my main and I know the class inside out.

I do still suffer from that boredom if I move away from a Templar. I'm simply too lazy to learn a new class and new rotations. I also prefer the buying and selling side of the game to any other part of the game. Had it not been for that side of the game, I'd have binned this game years ago. Different strokes for different folk as they say.

I expected to enjoy the game simply because it's Elder Scrolls. And I do for that reason, for sure. But damn - the learning curve on this type of combat.... combined with mega-ping....

I toughed it out and got my main account main (Redguard warden) to 50 on the New Life Festival quests (which were really fun, and pretty darn valuable not only for the XP....) And then I got dumped on my rear because somehow I didn't realize that hitting 50 was going to mean not being able to kill stuff much! I missed the memo....

Anyway, things are improving. She's CP 65 now, and if I can catch up to a friend, she's going to help me get Sha to CP 160 sooner rather than later so I can quit crafting new sets every 10 levels.... And hopefully by then I'll have learned 8 or 9 traits in everything. I missed that memo too.

But of course, I still have altitis. Besides my main.... I have 23 alts. In June I'll have 25 (when the extra slot lands on both accounts). Then I have no doubt at all I'll buy the remaining slots on the second account.

Levels 30-50 hurt the first time through. A lot. I totally get the pain. I mean, I was having tons of trouble when I passed level 10, then level 25... and on and on. But until 25, levels go by at a reasonable clip. After that, it feels like the game goes into super slo-mo. Which, of course, is exactly the time that quests and delves become longer and more intricate. So the slog gets sloggier. Meanwhile, combat difficulty and mob density ramp up.

It's brutal. I almost quit multiple times then. I got so sick of my sorc and the game. I forced myself through, and come level 50, things got better. Even if I was getting my butt plastered to the wall during the early CP grind, stuff also died a lot faster. My delve completion time went from 45 mins on average, to around 15-20 minutes. That alone made things more tolerable.

At CP 170, I started really loving the game. Decent set gear + a few survivability buffs made it a little easier and I could finally relax into the stories.

I've never enjoyed the combat in this game on its own merits, but the stories and atmosphere made me bull my way through. CP made combat much more bearable, same with quest duration. Same with ESO+ and the XP boost. Eliminating a lot of inventory issues helped too. This game foists a lot of extraneous nuisance on you. Easing that makes playing a lot more fun.

My advice: weigh if what you enjoy about the game vs. the annoyances. If you like the stories and quests enough, try a sub for a month. Use your crowns for XP boosts/packages to help you get through the slog. Learn to open chests and use complete sets of armor. Those bonuses are critical. Start using food.

If you make it to CP, grats! It's only easier and more fun from here :)

It really does seem MMORPGs are not your style if you dislike the class system that much. Especially since Zos has so much available that is not part of the class compared to most MMORPGs it seems I am correct.

So far, you're a class act. So I hope you find a way to massage the game to your satisfaction. It can be a really rough game - I was blindsided by so many things in this iteration of Elder Scrolls (and not because I had no background in MMOs either.... I played WoW for years, and then RIFT for more years....)

The combat here is an issue for me because my ping is so high. Combat is - unforgiving....

I can relate, as I start new characters all the time, usually because I find some nuance that I missed along the way that I wish all my characters had. That said, I do have one at 50/270 - and the Only reason I have that is because it is my crafter. I wanted to be able to craft everything for the other characters. (I ran Dolmens from level 40 on using xp scrolls and Festival xp bonuses) My highest other character is 33. Been playing this game for around 4 years, but have really devoted a lot of time to it in the past year or so.

My advice - First, find a character STYLE that you enjoy playing. Ranged DPS? Melee with big weapons? Magic with pets? You will only stick with it IF you enjoy it.

Second - Find a character you you really LIKE LOOKING AT. If the Race looks Ugly to You, DON'T play it. Along with this, after creation, and you get into the outfit bench, take some time and make the character look good TO YOU. One great aspect of the outfit system is you can "see" items on you that you dont have the recipe for. If you find something really cool you can go to guild stores and try and find the recipe. All it takes is one character to know how to craft it and it is forever in your outfit options.

Third - Take the Race and Style and Min Max it. By that I mean you will Not enjoy this game if everything is always a tooth and nail slog through combat, and you die on a regular occasion. You want to be able to slaughter the average mobs easily and have fun doing it. Check what others advise as far as weapons, armor and skills for the race/class/style you want to play.

Fourth - Give it a name you can identify with - like an old successful D&D character. Something that reminds you of a character that you have had success and fun with in the past. And just play with the spellings. You probably wont get the first one, but you can probably achieve a phonetic version of your favorite name.

Fiveth - Take a good look at achievements. Nothing makes you feel better than "winning". This game has SOOO many achievements, if you look at the ones for the area you in you can see objectives you want to complete. Do them, feel good about what you accomplish, then look for more to do. And check class achievements. And general achievements. etc etc etc.

    Above all else...

    Have Fun

    EDIT:fixed a couple spellings

@dannymcgr81b14_ESO ……… take your level 30's to Kyne(below 50 pvp) you might just suddenly find a bit of fun in the game!!

I swore that PVP was never going to be my thing BUT Kyne totally changed my mind...…. now I even venture into "Big Boys" PVP with my max characters :)

I actually have several characters always levelling horse speed so when I level a character out of Kyne at 50 I have another ready to go :)

I generally delete characters that have levelled in Kyne when they hit 50, I only keep the ones that I feel have potential! :)

Since they've had the "country in progress", I got hard time to stop completing every single thing. Geez I've lost so many time in my leveling because of that.

Classes don’t have all their skills at level 30. Not all skills will even be morphed. And classes can play quite differently with a full set of skills. In fact, levels 1-50 are in some ways just like a long tutorial, That said, if you’ve been unable to get a character past level 30 in four or five years, I’m gonna say the ESO is not for you. Don’t force it, cancel your Elsweyr preorder if you can, and go play a game you really enjoy.

I don't think that the classes are the problem.

I assume you only do the quests, so you should definitely try different content. I would get sick of spamming jabs on enemy npcs like a bot too.
Did you try dungeons, arenas, trials, pvp, completing achievements, different weapons and sets, etc.? There is so much to do in ESO.

Maybe you try too hard to enjoy the quests and stories... tbh, I can't. I need other players to interact and play with. The last singleplayer game I struggled myself through was Dishonored. I mean.. the game was fun and everything, but..
    Characters worth mentioning:
    Daedrós - Magicka DK - Altmer - PvE & PvP - Emperor - IR - GH - TTT
Dragybor - Stamblade - Redguard - PvE (first char)

I have 5 max (current max) cp toons and tbh, I feel the same way. This game never holds me for long. I come back for a month, max 2, and get bored very fast. This game has everything I should like, and do, but it never keeps me for long and I stay gone for months and months at a time. I play dc universe as well and the combat there is just much faster paced, Tanking there is more fun, and the que system is far superior.

Eso doesn’t nickel and dime players which I appreciate (look up dcuo sp system for reference, it’s flat out robbery) and you can put it down for years and come back and not really be behind. The combat I am ok with as is, but the fact that the que system feels broken is a deal breaker. It is too much of a hassle getting into a trial, would rather be able to que into it. And the game waited too long for text chat. Yes I’m console. That alone made it DOA for a time. I gave it a fair shot but maybe it just isn’t for me.

I am going to try the necro class since it sounds awesome. Maybe play a month or two then drop it again for awhile. If they fixed trial queing maybe I would stick around. Still have never been able to group into one.

I'd like to offer a little advice. It sounds like you get overwhelmed by everything that there is to do in the game. And there is a lot! Gameplay in ESO is a marathon, not a sprint to get everything done at once. Best thing is to pick one or two goals and complete them then move on to the next. Instant gratification is not going to happen here. I've been playing daily since game came out and still have not accomplished all I have wanted to do. It's a fun game, just pace yourself :) As an example, I have been trying to obtain the Jorvuld's Lightning Staff out of Scalecaller Peak recently. Ten days and 70 + runs in both normal and vet to no avail. It really, really stinks :P but I'm still determined and having fun with it . It will eventually drop and I will be like "whew" , glad that is over! And then on to next goal :)

Partially due to design. The character progression is very flat. It's a blessing and a curse.its great for a new player so they dont feel left behind , it's not good for some one who enjoys a vertical system that gradually unlocks new things in your character as you level. Eso is very light on attachment and community permanance

Yeah I mean the endgame is where it's at (this is after all, MMORPG) for most gamer. It's social, challenging and to some extent fun.

But if that's not your bag, there are about 1200 vanilla quests in the base game zones, another 400+ quests across the DLC zones and a lot of them are really quite interesting if you take the time to follow the plots. There are also countless in game achievements, go to your journal and track them all. Gathering Skyshards, learning crafting skills and motif, researching traits, I could go on and on.... A lot of bad things can be said about ESO and Zenimax right now but one thing it is not short on is volume of content, there is always something to be doing.

I spent a long part of my ESO lifetime in the social/endgame stuff and have only recently realized how much actual game, I missed!

The true "class" is when you get to 160cp and gear your character for PVP. Everything is viable, a lot of builds are good, 7th legion is OP and needs to be nerfed.

Nothing wrong with playing the game on and off, I myself am playing the game very little at the moment with no real incentive to go online unless I force myself to find something to do. (Ill enjoy it when I do it, but I have to get myself online in the first place).

Play when you want, just know that classes are a shell of their true selves until they're geared. You WILL feel underpowered, like you're playing wrong, like loads of people are better than you, and that all feeds into why people roll lots of alts. But they're not geared, you probably dont have champion points, and the people you're playing with probably are high CP and have crafted leveling gear.
